How long until day shift on your unit?

Hi there,

Just curious as to how long the wait for night shifters to come to day shift is on your unit?

My unit used to be 5-7 years, but a back log of long termers on day shift not retiring has pushed that out to 8-10 years.

How long is the wait to get to day shift in your NICU? 15 members have participated

I'm jealous of you 1-3 year responders!

3-6 years in average.

Most of the night shifters where I work are there by choice, so the few who do want to go to days don't have many people to compete with whenever a daytime position opens up. I know I certainly have no desire to work daytime lol

Night shift is killing me slowly.

I've worked night shift for 14 years (except when I travelled, then it was day shift - go figure). I do like working nights but nights doesn't like me anymore! The only postings now are for a "Peds-focused"/NICU positions. I don't mind working Peds but it's not what I want to commit to doing. I've applied to an NNP program - it may be the only way to get on days!

Depending on the availability, often after 1-2 years you can get a day/night rotation. Our unit only rotates folks 1-3 nights/4 week schedule. But for straight days? 12's will take 26+years. Straight 8's on days? 28+ years.

My unit has openings for days all the time . We have a high turnover rate . I never wanted days on this unit . At night time is crazy as it is , I can't imagine days !!!

You work in a NICU where there's *high* turnover?? I don't think I've ever heard of such a place.

I didn't realized this was a NICU forum .... Uppppsss.

I never had to do nights. We have a high turnover in our unit so those who want days get it before they get off orientation or are on nights for 6 months max. I was a lucky one who got days while on orientation.

The first 4 years I worked in my NICU, the turnover was low. Now, working there sucks like a Hoover (not Herbert), and we have lost 17 nurses in the last 12 months.
