Help with research paper PLEASE

Specializes in Pediatrics.

I am not sure where to post this so it can start in the general forum. I am a second year student and we have to write a research paper, next term. I am having a hard time finding articles for it.:crying2: I have used my schools website which has EBSCO host and Academic search premiere and I only have found 2 articles, we are supposed to have 3-5, I would like 5 as that gives me more to work with.:D

Any ways my paper topic is Addicted Newborns; the Impact of Nursing Care. So anything related to the nursing care of newborns, stress of the nurse taking care of addicted newborns, nursing care of newborns in withdrawal. If any of you have any helpful search hints as to where I could find articles I would so appreciate it. Thank you:yeah:

Try changing your search terms ie. use neonatal instead of newborn. I did a quick search of pub med just using neonatal addiction and came up with over 400 articles not all of those would be specific enough for you, but it would be a good place to start. Also, go to the references listed on your articles that you already have and see if any of those articles referenced will work for your search.

Here is one article for you that you may not have.

Drug use and pregnancy - challenges for public health.

Gyarmathy VA, Giraudon I, Hedrich D, Montanari L, Guarita B, Wiessing L.

I have used neonate, newborn, infant, addiction, withdrawal, nursing, nurse and various forms. They want the paper to focus on the nursing care of our topics, so I was thinking along the lines of nursing interventions that can help aide in withdrawal symptoms of the addicted newborns, the stress nurses have when caring for such patients.....

I suggest using broader searches like I did and just going through the list of articles yourself until you find the articles you are looking for. Also, if you have a research librarian at your school they could help you find the articles.

also, consider the peripheral concepts of your paper, such as stress in nurses, pain scales for neonates, etc

Call a children's hospital and talk to the patient and/or staff educator; if they can not help you I bet they can put you in touch with one of the units where some of the nurses may be able to help. You could also contact a Home Health Agency that cares for newborns in the home, public health nursing, etc.

Not my area of expertise, but I would think journals for NICU nurses would have information along the lines of what you are seeking. Research the professional association for NICU nursing. Good Luck. Let us know how it works out.

If your school provides you with access to CINAHL, I recommend using that database. It is a dedicated Nursing/Allied Health database. Good luck!

I second CINAHL, I found it to be the most comprehensive of all the databases that my University offered. (Although it was a little tricky to learn to use well)

A little trick that should work well in most databases

Instead of typing: Nurse

Try: Nurs*

This will bring back all results that include the word nurse, nursing, nurses, nurse's etc.

This trick works well with any word that has multiple suffixes

Good luck :)

Can I ask: the paper is about nursing interventions but do all of the research articles have to pertain to the interventions? You could find one that talks about the assessment findings, etc.

Otherwise, I suggest the librarian to help, using alternate terms like diagnosis, the names of the drugs themselves (perhaps your search is in fact, too broad) and looking at the reference list to the articles you have (already suggested)

Good luck!
