Help! need advice please..new RN job offer

You can't really "get in trouble" per say, but you do run the risk of them finding out. Even if you live in a large metro area, you would be surprised how close-knit the nursing community is. Many recruiters and managers know each other and may talk shop. If job #2 finds out that you did that after the fact, it may affect your ability to get a job there in the future.

The other problem with doing that is it is difficult to decide in 2 weeks if you are going to like a job or not. You may not even get to spend time on the floor for the first few weeks because you will be going through general hospital nursing orientation. In my opinion, it would be best to decide on a job and stick with it.

Ditto HealthyRN. I was offered a job right away after interviewing for what I considered my "backup"...and my first choice job said it would take 2 weeks to get back to me. I chose to be honest and tell the first I was waiting on an answer..but that I appreciated the offer and would consider it.

You can't know in the first few weeks. I didn't step foot on the floor for 3 weeks. First week was hospital wide orientation. Second was nursing orientation, third week was computer orientation. It wasn't fun. What if I backed out and left? I love my job now.

Do your research..ask around. Compare pt/nurse ratios, benefits, pay, shifts offered and pick one. Politely decline the other..and let them know you'll keep them in mind in the future if you're ever on the job hunt again.

Wow, I would not have accepted both positions, but this is my opinion. There is a learning curve present in each job and 2 weeks is not enough time to make an accurate assessment as to whether you like the job. It took me a good 6 months before I started to enjoy my current job.

they hold back 2 weeks salary for the 1st pay check

they dont pay you the full amt until after orientation

ghetto neighborhood-which i live in-hospital is 5 minutes away

4 weeks vacation after 6 months

2 hours away

payed the full amount during orientation and on....

How about you decide which job offer is the best for you. Do not burn bridges. A written reply declining the job offer that starts in two weeks is most approriate.

I was offered 2 rn positions. I accepted them both

job 1 starts tomorrow

job 2 starts next 2 weeks-

i was planning to go through orientation for about a week or more with job 1 and if i don't like it, tell them i changed my mind and just stick with job 2 which starts in 2 weeks.

can i get in trouble for that?

i am a new rn and its my first job its just that i didnt want to miss out with out trying it out first. i figured that if it worked out with job 1 i would inform job 2 that i had changed my mind .

Kendel - it's your life - if you are able to try both, you'll probably be even happier about your decision to take one or the other job when you have more information. Let's face it, you don't know until you actually work there, and I think you'll probably find out much sooner than later what it would be like. How lucky to have some choices!

If you can't afford to move yet, I might stick with the hospital close to home and save, save, save. When you have enough to move, I'd then generate an offer from the distant hospital and move out there.

If you can afford to move, I'd move to the hospital in the nicer area right now.

..if it was... probably number 2. that ghetto place may or not be a "teaching facility" but it will most assuredly be a learning facility. you don't seem to be the mother theresa type. it's nice to have choices isn't it?

Kendel - I would definitely go for the "professional" environment. There are lots of parameters, but this aspect will be your day to day reality.

another thought Kendel - number two looks like there is a lot of consideration for the employee - vacation, getting paid for orientation,

etc. I can tell you're nervous about working at #1. Maybe best strategy for you is to write a carefully worded letter of resignation saying how much you like the job, but the other is better suited to you, etc. etc.

No amount of "getting in trouble" if you are polite and show remorse that you have to leave so soon. The commute is a hassle but I still think the environment would be my focus in this situation.
