Help! Hate my Job

Published

I'm a new grad & have been working for two months as a charge nurse @ a psych hospital.

We're ALWAYS short staffed, I'm expected to MANAGE all the employees on the unit & do my OWN job & often the job of the LPN.

I HATE my job & I'm beginning to question if going into Nursing was the right choice. I loved being a nurse in school, but out here in the real world I find myself depressed/angry every day.

Do you all have any suggestions? Are all Nursing jobs like this?

First, being charge after being a nurse for two whole months is ridiculous.

I'd suggest you start looking for another place. I know it's hard right now because I've been looking and the market is tight. I'm actually wanting to get out of the office and back to bedside, but there's not much out there in my area. Still be persistent and keep looking.

I think it's expecting a lot out of a new grad to be thrown to the wolves fresh out of the pack as charge nurse. Before you start thinking that you picked the wrong line of work, start applying for jobs elsewhere. Look for a place that will give you a decent amount of orientation and precepting before cutting you free.

Get out of there, charge as a brand new nurse is way too much too soon. Go somewhere and get the orientation and experience you need and deserve.

Just to clarify my orientation was a WHOLE 2 weeks & I've been working there for 2 months ...

wow people there are pscyhoes..hehe try to look else where for a new job..

i can see why you are angry and stressed! heck, look at the work load they're putting on you. most def find a new job if you are uncomfortable.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! No wonder you hate your job... CHARGE Nurse after 2 months.. They have lost your mind. Is psych really where you want to be? Try to get some other experience first.. med surg, LTC... something... Then later come back to psych.. DON'T give up on nursing due to this experience that you are now having... RUN don't walk to the nearest exit. My heart really goes out to you. Trust me... it shouldn't be like this for you.... I know that things are tight with this economy and all, but it will all work out for you.... Good luck to you and keep us posted on what you decide to do... TAKE CARE OF YOU!!!!!!!!!

Run, Run, Run as fast as you can!!!! That's just insane having a new grad assume charge responsibilites. If you can get some hospital experience. Do that for a year then find your niche. Dont feel bad, as I've been in nursing almost 30 years and just quit my dialysis job for the same reasons. "I hate my job" lol. I'm now not working, my bank account sucks but I dont hate my job anymore.

I worked psych for 25 years, all areas. I quit my job last year because they (powers that be) wanted to get me out so they could hire new nurses. It was the job from hell but it wasn't the patients that bothered me it was the supervision. They were doing cutbacks in staff and wanted to get rid of staff that were top of payscale and experience and hire nurses with less experience and seniority. They reallly didn't care about the patients and because I was always a strong pt advocate, I rubbed the nurse manager the wrong way. Anyway I am retired now and if I can help in anyway let me know,, the first thing to consider is if you like the field your in. Another is how supportive is the other staff you work with. What is their experience. One thing I did not like about nursing school is it is based more on idealism rather than realism.. And it doesn't prepare one for getting thrown to the wolves, as it appears has happened to you....

No, all jobs are NOT like this...I think it's ridiculous to expect you as a new grad to be charge nurse! Before you give up on your newfound career, try to find a job in a different hospital where you'll be given the support you deserve!
