Has anyone done the science classes online?

I'm trying to get as many as my pre/coreqs done online, rather than on-campus (I'm a mom of two small ones as well as have a home business, so being on-campus a lot is not possible at this time). I've signed up for my first online science class (Bio for Allied Health) next semester, and I'm also planning on taking Micro online in the summer, as well as A&Ps next year.

Has anyone taken classes with labs online? How does that work, and do you feel you're getting the full education by not having an in-person lab? Do you feel it's harder or easier to do it online, rather than in-person?

Hi Klone,

Welcome Aboard! Good to hear you are considering taking classes. I bet I know the school you will be taking the bio from. Rio Salado, right. Guess what? I am taking that course right now.

Ther are 14 lessons and 14 labs. I guess I have been spending about at minimum 10 hours a week on this class. I just took my midterm and it was tough. How the lab works is that they send you a lab kit and you perform the labs at home and then you submit a lab report to your instructor. The labs are actually very interesting. Some of the concepts are challenging, but I guess that's the point isn't it?

I don't think online vs traditional is really any different, you adjust to whatever it is that has to get done. For me, not having to drive to class was a major bonus. However, you do need to keep motivated when you do the distance learning thing.

I haven't taken any other science classes online so maybe someone else can answer your questions about micro and A&P.

Good Luck

I just finished online A&P with lab through CCCOnline and loved it. The instructor (Dugan) had a lot to do with it. Look at http://www.ccconline.org for more info, I can't say enough good stuff about his class.

Coldfoot,

What home college did you choose? I was trying to find that instructor that you referenced but I need to know what the home college is.

Thanks

Hi Mona,

I am interested in the Biology class through Rio Salado. I understand Deaconess takes this class in transfer, though I haven't received my Deaconess info yet ( asked for it almost 2 weeks ago!) Would you mind if I ask how much the course cost you? I could find fees on RS website. Also, are you taking the chemistry class through them as well?

TIA

Well, I just registered for that class through Rio Salado, and I paid $334 for tuition and lab fees (out-of-state tuition - I am an AZ resident, but have only lived here for 10 months - AZ residents pay a bit less). The books for the class were an additional $143 through eFollett.

Thankfully, my "home" school is also in the AZ community college network, so all classes taken at Rio Salado are transferrable.

Thanks for your input! I've taken 4 classes online so far and really enjoyed it. I've got a 4.0 so obviously online learning suits me. :) This will just be my first *science* course online so I was a bit curious as to how it worked for others.

I've just finished A&P I & II with CCC (Community Colleges of Colorado). The tuition is $134.90/credit plus a lab fee. It doesn't matter if you're a resident of Colorado or not. It's their online program, so it's irrelevant. I got my books at half.com for ALOT less!! I'm very impressed with their instructors and will take Micro and Chem, also.

This semester I'm taking Human Growth & Dev with them. It's for Deaconess' Psych 200D.

Feel free to PM with any questions. I'm starting my 3rd semester at Deaconess.

IMAemt,

I think the cost was about 140. credit hour. Keep in mind that the bio's are 4 credits. The lab kit was $25.

I haven't thought too much about where I am going to take micro but it will probably be through Rio, I think their online micro is new. I'm not sure that Rio offers an online chem course, I think they have a hybrid which means online and campus time.

I know that http://www.ccconline.org offers chem and so does http://www.weber.edu

Good Luck

Through CCConline, don't you have to attend the actual college to do the lab portion of the course? That was my understanding from the website..that all didatic was done online, but the lab was at the actual college. Maybe I read it wrong. Do any of you know?

TIA

Lisa

I went through Red Rocks as my home school but I'm not sure if Chris is doing an A & P 1 this semester, he is doing 2 for sure.

No, the WHOLE class is online (which is why I took it, the Alaska to Colorado commute would have been a killer:D ). For the Labs you spend a lot of time looking at slides on the Net.

If I can give anyone any help, let me know.

I found Weber State University in Utah offers completely online classes with or without lab. I found them at www.chemclassonline.com. I've hear that the classes are good. Anyone else heard of them or attended?

Apparently, the entire class is run from home on your computer including the lab. You have a lab manual and a lab CD that has the pictures of the experiments so you can make the observations and data reports. I hear it is a tough class, but a good one. I guess don't plan on sliding through this one. I suppose that's good so we can learn what we need to know to go forward. Anyone else hear about the online chemistry with labs?
