Glut of NPs?

I am an older student nurse set to graduate in May and hoping to eventually start working toward an NP after getting some RN experience. I heard today from a fellow student that there's a glut of NPs and they're having a hard time finding jobs. Is this true and are there fields that are wide open for NPs now? I haven't decided on a specialty yet -- FNP, acute, cardiac, neuro, psych, etc. My interests are varied right now. Thanks!

Depends on the area, I guess. You'd have to research the area you want to work in.

It is very dependent on where you live. I live in central IL and here, all APN's are having a tight market. However, my understanding is that in Chicago - they are begging for APN's. Look over your area, contact some APNs to get an idea BEFORE you start your APN program. Congrats on your upcoming graduation.

Thank you, T. I've enjoyed reading many of your posts. You give me a good idea -- I will start talking to NPs here (Knoxville area). The ones I've met so far are palliative, cardiac, family. Truth be told, I would love to work with psychiatrists and be the NP who provides medical care. So many psych pts have comorbidities these days b/c of their meds--cardiac, DM, etc. Happy holidays!

You are very welcome - happy holidays to you also.

traumaRUs is correct. You will need to see what your area will support in the way of NP and specialty/s that you select.

Where I am, the FNP is better suited (rural areas).

I'm glad to see you will work as RN for a while - you will have a better insight on the specialty that you wish to pursue as NP.

Good luck.
