Giraffe Beds - how often do you change them?

Looks like everyone is on the same page - weekly here, too. And yes, if a baby is very very unstable of course we're not going to move, but we will at least make the effort to disinfect whatever surfaces we can while the baby is still inside. We'll also raise the top up to let it air out a little bit.

The unit I currently work at changes them every 4 weeks. But, also, if the kid is on humidity, we empty the water out once a day and caviwipe the inside of the drawer, because pseudomonas can grow.

My previous unit where I worked changed the beds every two weeks. And they were ALL giraffes.

We change out our giraffe beds every two weeks. Regular isoletts get changed out once a week. Of coorifice if a baby is to unstable for the giraffe to be changed out - we just leave them in there. Right now we have a set of 24 week twins that have been in their giraffe beds for almost 4 weeks - they were each just over 450g at birth, and are still way under 700g... the beds have been wiped down several times. We have 9 (or 10) giraffe beds now, so we still have a few that we have set up for our "25 weeker" beds - beds that we take down the the DR that have everything in them ready to go.

Yeah we change weekly too, that goes for all incubators but obviously if they are really sick then we leave them alone.

Part of the morning checks and jobs is cleaning your inc inside and out with hospec and drying it thoroughly.

With regards humidity, as soon as the baby is off humidity we dry out the chamber for pseudomonas reasons.

We have two types of giraffes, the lift-up tops (which are brill for intubation) and the normal kind, they look the same but no lid.

We change out all of our beds (giraffes, airshields, radiant warmers, open cribs .... just not ECMO beds) every 2 weeks.

Annoyed at myself though because one of our older babies (prev 550g) was doing well and there wasn't any spare giraffes about cos the management have started moving spares to the other end of the hospital (aren't managers clever?). I put baby into our old style incubators and now he is sick again and on daily weights so we have to get him out cos it doesn't weigh like the mighty giraffe. Oops. :trout:

Might go and swap him back with his cares tomorrow night.
