I sat in the freaking ED for about 6 hours yesterday (and would have waited longer if necessary) because I was due to have my PAS Port access changed and my home health nurse was out sick. The RN that they sent instead wasn't able to successfully get the port accessed (twice it would aspirate blood but when we went to flush it leaked out the needle hole) so, needing to get my IV meds overnight I had to make a visit to the ED. That stupid machine stared at me the whole time, but I avoided temptation successfully!
I think it is one thing if the patients bring their own McDonalds, coke and chips, but for the ED to have a vending machine IN the waiting room....thats just ridiculous! Patients who should be NPO for SBO, Appendicitis, possible ruptured ectopic, etc. may not know they shouldn't eat or drink, and lo and behold the hospital is providing them the death cert. ready to be signed because they choose to eat from the forbidden "tree" in the waiting room! When will we learn that enough is ENOUGH!?!
That same ED did have a soda machine at one point. It was the old school kind where it actually showed the soda can in a display window on top and then you made your selection. I have a feeling that when that OLD machine died they got rid of it and kept the food and coffee machines. The cafeteria is not far though for people who need that diet/sugar filled carbonated caffeine kick!

Your local ED is wishing you a "Happy Heart Attack" this holiday season. I know I won't be accepting their "gift", I will leave it for all of those with abdominal pain rating a 15/10.
