Getting my foot in the door...

Hi guys and gals! I want to work in the hospital setting but I have no experience or certifications for anything. What kind of jobs can you get in a hospital without any experience?

Specializes in Pedi.

Are you a nurse? A student? An aide?

I am a student.

Specializes in Pedi.

Have you done any clinicals? If so, apply to be an aide.

Specializes in Oncology; medical specialty website.
I am a student.

High school? College? Nursing school? A few details would go a long way.

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

If you are a nursing student past your first semester you can potentially get hired as a nursing aid/patient care tech or as a nurse extern. These jobs are not easy to get but they are out there.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I agree- a CNA position is likely your best bet. One nice thing, aside from the patient care experience and working alongside nurses, is that you can make some good connections if you're outgoing and put yourself out there.

You may need to do a CNA program, depending on where you are in school (student is vague!).

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.
What kind of jobs can you get in a hospital without any experience?
1. Dietary aide; 2. Transporter; 3. Housekeeping/Environmental services technician; 4. Unit secretary/clerk

Contact anyone you know in a hospital. Let them know you're interested in whatever job you will take. Some start off as secretaries then go to techs and once they finish school they become an RN. I had a family friend work in an area I currently work in. I had no desire at all to work in psych. But that happens to be my first hospital job. I know I have a job once I receive my RN :). I got this position due to a family friend. Even though I hated psych I've grown to take a liking to it.
