Future Nurse

Hi,

I am currently looking to buy a new printer for my nursing studies but before I do I wanted to ask how much printing do teachers do now? For papers such as essays etc.. do teachers make you e-mail them or still print out. I was looking at a very small printer that just prints and doesn't have duplex printing so before I spend $200 I needed some advice.

Honestly I'd save your money and just go to the library at school a few minutes early and print your stuff. FWIW I don't have a printer at home and just print at school -- my tuition dollars pay for that ink and paper too.

How much you print depends on the teacher and how you like to study, like printing powerpoints to take notes on in class.

$200 seems an awful lot for a basic printer. There are some at various stores (Target, Office Depot, Walmart) that sell for $40-55 that do basic printing if that's all your after. Even better, Costco seems to always have printers, which have more functions, and they do not cost too much more - usually around the $70-80 range. Sure the printers can get into the $200's if you're looking for fancier options. My only gripe about Costco is they usually carry HP and I can't stand the brand, but that's just my personal experience w/ HP laptops.

It's been my experience that teachers in general, not just nursing studies, now have you turn in papers online either through a plagiarizing website or some type of online system where they just open it and grade it. Not to say you may run into some whom still prefer paper copies. You may just want to have a printer in mind and wait until school starts and see who requires what. I still think it's a great idea to get a printer for yourself regardless though, because there will come a day where you will have to print something out or make copies of some sort.

The problem with the $50 printers is that they don't have duplex printing. If a teacher has me do a 50 page paper im not going to flip the paper every time. I also need one for my own use.

I have never had a teacher allow "duplex printing."

Staples routinely has printers for $50 that duplex. Brother MFC-J4800DW is such an example. I just bought my mother the newer version for $49.99 on sale. Works just fine for everything that I've needed.

All our papers are submitted online because it runs a plagiarism check automatically that way. I’m guessing most schools are the same way. If you need to print, you can probably save to a cloud website like Dropbox or google drive and print at school. A lot of people print class notes and PowerPoint stuff to take notes in class - if you’re a paper note taker then a cheap printer will probably prove useful for that.

2017 grad here-I printed out every single PPT lecture (between 30-100 slides) to take notes on, plus exam study guides and other assignments. Some of my classmates chose to take notes on their laptops instead. You can buy an inexpensive printer for around $50 that will “get the job done” with dual-sided printing capabilities, which I recommend. Good luck in your studies!

I don't print PPT slides anymore, to much paper. I agree with Rionoir, I believe many papers are submitted through e-mail and the plagiarism checker I just wanted to check. Im gonna take everyones advice and not even buy one, ill just use the schools printers.Thank you
