Freaky Things

So, am watching tv with the hubby. We are watching some ghost hunting show which he totally loves. I think it's poo poo. My arguement, "if places where people die are so haunted, wouldn't I always get spooked @ work. We don't have any ghosts or anything like that." He says we do, but we are just too busy to notice. Anyway, I think it would be fun if everyone told a freaky story. Surely everyone has a freaky death story, right? You know, the story everyone loves to tell. Here's mine. A few years ago a pt came in and she was really sick....near code sick. One of the md's was at the foot of her bed giving verbal orders. The pt begins moving her hand in this shooing motion. The nurse asked her what was wrong, what was she doing? The pt says, "get him out of here. make him leave!" The nurse said, "that's the dr, honey, he's trying to help you." The pt said, "no, not him! That man next to him, please, make him leave, he's scaring me!" (there was no one else there.) Seconds later, the pt coded. (insert scary music here)

I worked in a clinic on the second floor. The elevator did wierd things...kind of like it tried to close but couldn't decide if it should or not. One time I got in and it did that for quite a few minutes. It was across from the receptionist's desk. As I stood there looking confused, she said, "oh, that's just one of the ghosts. This place is haunted." I got out of the elevator and asked more about it. Turns out the clinic was built on the site of a murder. The receptionist said sometimes if you get here early in the morning there's a white foglike thing that goes up and down the hall before all the lights are on. Sheesh, sometimes I got there early, but I wasn't going to do THAT anymore. I actually looked on the internet for haunted places, and goldarn it, the clinic was on the list!

And...the elevator continued to have it's indecision and I never saw the foglike thing....

I've heard a lot of stories like this and I can only guess that it is the angel of Death that they see.

At the same time, I have witnessed others who are fully prepared for death and relax into it. One man in particular got up from bed in the morning, asked for his favorite clothes to be prepared and his favorite breakfast (very simple rice porridge with fish) and then asked for some friends from the community to come and visit. He simply rested back in his chair and said "I'm so glad you could all come. I'm going to die today and I wanted to see you all again." Then, being Muslim, he recited the confession of faith "There is only one God and Muhammad is his messenger" and then died peacefully.

I think that death comes with two faces, those who are prepared for death and are at peace with themselves see the beautiful and shining face but those who fear death and have conflict within themselves see the dark and harsh face.

Regardless, the Angel is the same.

Thanks for sharing.

Okay, I have my freaky story.

Several years ago, I worked as a manager in a nursing home. We had resident paired up as room mates in rooms. There was this one little old lady who was absolutely EVIL. She offered poop balls to surveyers as chocolates, she hit and scratched the staff routinely and she complained about her care constantly. This lady was just as bad as they come. Her roommate, on the otherhand was just as sweet as sweet could be. Well one morning her roommate started screaming hysterically, "Not me, not me! It's not MY time, you don't want ME!!! NO, NO, NO!!!!" We went into her room to find out what was going on, only to find the mean little old lady dying in the bed beside her. When we asked the mean little old lady's roommate what happened, why she was screaming, she said she saw demons taking the crazy mean little old lady away, and they tried to take her. Fast forward one month later... The sweet little old lady roommate died just as peacefully as could be. CRAZY!

i had a patient once who was in CHF who kept saying "travis! travis get outta my room! travis what do you want! why do you keep comin in here?" she had one daughter with her...so after about an hour of these travis calls, i pulled the daughter aside and said "do you know who travis is?" and she was like "oh yes.. travis was momma's older brother. he died a few years ago"

i pulled that code cart right outside the door. never a good sign when your patients speak to dead family members.

30 minutes later, she coded, and died.

The place I use to work at had doors slam shut and the sound of footsteps when no one was around, but the freakiest of all was the sound of children laughing over the intercom system.

When my GM got burned in a house fire, she got MRSA and was hospitalized for treatment. GM had always been sharp as a tack, and she was a pistol-ball to boot, we had a heck of a time with her. Dementia started setting in and she would try to get OOB, no matter the fact she had not walked in 4 months. I was staying with her one night, and my DH stopped by on his way to work to see us. He asked how she was doing, and she told him,

"Well, I'd be fine if they'd let me lay down." (Mind, she's laying in bed at the time)

"Grandmother, you ARE laying down."

"I am not, I'm standing in the corner of the kitchen."

"GM, I promise you, you're in bed."

Now, D is terrified of ghosts, and old people scare him, too, he only ever visited me at work once when I worked in LTC. So, he was at a disadvantage already. But when GM looked to the corner of the room WHERE THERE WAS NOT A LIVING SOUL and responded,

"Hmph, does it LOOK like I'm in a bed to you?",

he lost it.

"I'll see you later, Miss Lillie. Baby, I love you. I'm gone."

GM died a couple days later, DH never came to the hospital again. I agree, it's never a good sign when they start talking to folks that aren't there.

OK- here is my freaky story but it is not about someone dying. Just as a disclaimer, I am not proselytizing or wanting to get into a religious disussion. THis is just something that happened to me and my perception of it.

We have a young female schizophrenic patient we used to see some. She was always hard to deal with, even when she was compliant with her meds. Well, one day she came in and was having hallucinations of a demonic nature. Alot of talk of demons, the devil, God, etc... She was growling and carrying on something awful. Now, I am a born-again Christian with what believe is a very strong faith. So, I go into her room to start her IV and I promise she crawls up to the top of her cot and starts screaming at me to get out. She keeps saying "Get out! She can't come in here!" She was frantic and obviously afraid. Completely freaked me out. Believe what you want about it, but it is still freaky.

A couple of years ago I was very close to a resident. I will call her Josie. I worked the night shift and she was often up at night. She started to decline. I had a feeling she would not be there when I got back to work and my nights off were coming up. At 2:30 in the am I woke up and made a call into work I new she had passed. My coworker said how could you possibly know that she just died. That has never happened to me since.

Over the course of my nursing career I have experienced numerous patient deaths. It always seems there is some circumstance revolving around one that you always remember. Several months back, a terminally ill patient whom had been suffering from leukemia for a number of years began declining in health rapidly. One night around supper time, he became very anxious and indicated that he had to get ready because they were coming to get him at 6pm. Several minutes later when checking on his status again he had passed away at nearly 6pm on the dot.
