FIRED

Ok so i live in oklahoma but am from massachusetts, my children were in mass visiting my parents for a month. I mad all of the arrangements to go get them the weekend of halloween. Informed my don, covered the shifts and all that. So i went and got them. Then i showed up the following weekend and i wasnt on the schedule. So i called the manager and asked why and she told me that i was a ncns and my job was terminated. They couldnt even have the respect to have me come in and talk to me or call me or anything they just let me show up at 5 in the morning. What did i do wrong>?? Oh and did i mention the don will not see me to talk about what happened. She wont return my calls and refuses to see me when i go in there.

Come back to New England Hollie and forget Oklahoma, besides, you'd make more money. I know the cost of living is higher here, but be closer to your family. Your DON sounds evil. Did she have a grudge and took it out on you? Sounds like she dumped on you and is too ashamed to deal with it.

Unfortunately, it sounds as if your DON wanted you gone from the facility anyway.

I've seen this game played before in the several nursing homes where I have been employed. A nurse has prearranged to have some days off from work, and he/she has even gone so far as to ensure that all the shifts are covered. However, when the nurse returns from the time off, his/her employment has been terminated for a bogus reason such as no call/no show, unauthorized vacation, insubordination, misconduct, etc.

I'm sorry that you have lost your job in an unfair manner.

Next time, get any schedule changes in writing and make a copy for yourself.

Talk to the administrator if that don't work go on up the chain to the corporate mgr or labor board. You probably wouldn't want to be rehired but you at least deserve an explanation and what about the coverage you got? Talk to the nurses who. Worked for you while you were gone.

Are you under a union? If you are then go straight to them. In this day in age where it's hard to find a job, I would also speak to an attorney for wrongful termination. File a grievance against your DON and as others have metioned, go up the chain of command. Even though your DON doesn't return your calls, and refuses to see you, log it down anyway and show it to the administrator. Don't let them get away with it. Good Luck

Make sure to always have a copy of your schedule that way you have legs to stand on when something like this happens because it will happen again.

would it help to file for unemployment? would that straighten anything out?

The OP indicates that she works in Oklahoma, which is generally one of the most anti-union states in existence. I currently attend school in Oklahoma City and have attended clinical rotations at many of the healthcare facilities around the city. None of these hospitals and facilities have been unionized.

My first thought upon reading the story was, "Hmmm, at-will employee, huh?."

That kind of stuff is much harder with a well-written employment contract, the kind that's negotiated by a good union under collective bargaining.

If you have documentation then at least they won't be able to fight your unemployment benefits. If not, you should expect them to fight it by saying that you were terminated for cause.

I'm really sorry for your situation.

I agree 100%. I'm sorry that you came back from your trip to find out that you were fired! I would like to know the "real" reason why I was fired though. How can you do that though if the DON isn't speaking to you? Maybe shoot her a voice message or email and ask her what exactly you did do or what you could have improved on? She would probably just ignore the messages though. I do believe you AT LEAST DESERVE an explanation! That's a tough situation and wish you the best on finding a new job.
