finding work on interim permit (in Canada)

Published

How difficult is it to find a nursing job in LTC/nursing home while you are on interim permit? I read that the chances of finding jobs are better once you pass the crne but while you're waiting to sit the exam, how difficult/easy is it to land a job? Thanks for your replies.:nurse:

Moving this to the International Forum as it pertains to immigration and licensure issues.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize i was in the wrong forum. I wanted to hear from Canadians how difficult/easy it is to find a nursing job in LTC/nursing home while on interim permit. That is, when one is done with licensure assessment, waiting to take the CRNE, passed the immigration process and physically in Canada with Social Security.

Interim permit is what it is called in the US, as well as the SSN#.

Unless you are already a landed immigrant, you need to be sponsored by an employer in the first place to get the visa for Canada in the first place.

There is no way to get the visa without first having an employer.

Title edited to show that your question is specific for Canada.

i will be moving to canada in a few weeks time as an immigrant and will be applying for SIN# soon after I land. i have ongoing application for registration with CRNBC and am hoping to work on interim permit while i wait to sit for the CRNE on October. I wanted to know how difficult/easy it is for a landed immigrant to find a nursing job in LTC/nursing home in Canada while on interim permit.

Thank you for clarifying that, always much better when you include all of the information so that it can make it easier for someone to provide the requested information for you.

Let's clarify a little bit:

1. If you come in Canada under immigration procedure already DONE, means that you will be resident you will have SIN in couple of weeks so you could start to find jobs.

2. The College already asses your file? What they told you? They let you to sit for CRNE?

Do you know everything about what means interim permit and what are the condition to obtain one in BC? Be carefull you can't apply for interim if you felt just one time the exam! Also look for how many time you can

be registred for interim permit. If in this time you will fell down the CRNE just one time , the interim permit will be stopped.

My advice... wait until you will have a clear response from College, hopefully your degree will be enough to obtain interim permit. Be sure that you know everything about what means Interim permit like RN in BC.

Find THE facility....is not so hard to find a LTC who wants you in Canada, talk open with them, tell them what is your situation from the first time. Talk with them about interim permit that you need it and also that you are canadian resident.

A trick: tell them that you want to be under interim permit as much as possible and after your permanent RN you could commit with them (on my times Ontario gave 2 or 3 interim permits renews each of them at 6 months, so one year in half, working under interim permit, but if you fell down ONLY one CRNE exam the interim is off). So my advice FIND THE FACILITY, tell them that you will be there for them as long the interim permit allowed you to be, and your CRNE exam will be NOT before than the last interim renewal will be done. In this time go and take some prepartions CRNE classes on college, enhance your skills are a lot of programs for CRNE. Don't be in hurry to be full RN licence and tring to pass exam in hurry!

You will find your place I am sure BUT JUST if the College give you the agree for your nursing credentials and if you are enough smart to plan and schedule your life.

Canada does not have Social Security. That is an American term for a system that does not exist here.

Fiona SIN, SSN are the same in the meaning my love, come and give me a hug sweety pie....be good, think good my love! Are so many nurses all around who realy want and enjoy to work in Canada, let's help them in the way that one time we wished to be helped ...Huuuuuuuug Fiona:icon_hug:

thank you zuzi for your advise. i should hear from the college anytime soon as all my documents have already been submitted. i hope my credentials will satisfy them. If not, i will have to enroll in a nursing program in canada as i will be landing with eligibility or not. i understand the limitations of the temporary permit and i have a lot of preparing to do for the CRNE. i know it won't be easy but i look at a glass half full instead of half empty.

lots and lots of hugs for you, love.

This is just my experience so it is somewhat anecdotal. I am Canadian so did not have the immigration issues you have but I decided to go to school in the US since in Canada you have to take a bachelors program. It was quicker to get into a PN program first but since I couldn't work in the US as an LPN I applied to take the LPN exam in Canada. I eventually completed my RN but wanted to work in Canada while I was waiting to get into the RN program. I applied for jobs but did not get any response as most of the hospitals have online applications only. But when I got my official license I started to receive a lot more interest. Even though it was costly going through all of the paperwork and cost of the exam I found it really helped me to have some added work experience before continuing on with school.

This is only my experience. I believe with the RN interim permit you can purchase it by month or number of months. But my gut feeling is that you will not have this experience as an RN. There is a MUCH greater shortage of RN's than LPN's. It is amazing to go into a hospital in Canada. They will have a whole wall of open positions for RN's and only a handful for other occupations. It is pretty overwhelming.
