finding a suitable nursing job in canada

Published

hi..

i am an Msc Nurse (specialized in psychiatric nursing)from India with one and a half years of teaching experience. i had almost a year of teaching experience before i did my PG. now i am planning to go to canada because my husband is there and really confused about finding a job. i have received my eligibility for writing CRNE. but since i have only 6 months of clinical experience i am not so confident that i will get a job even if i pass CRNE. is there any other option for me? like going for teaching nursing as i did before or anything else.. or should i first get into a clinic or old age home and get experience before working in a hospital setting. please give me an advice on what i should do???

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

I see no reason why you couldn't write the CRNE and if you pass apply for a job in a hospital.Don't sell yourself short. You don't need to restrict yourself to clinics or LTC. Do you have a visa sorted out?

Best of luck.

hi loriangel14,

thank you so much for your reply...i am being sponsored by my husband and my visa processing is going on..i am worried as i donot have much clinical experience which is of utmost importance to apply for a nursing job. i dint mean to restrict myself into clinics, but the thing is that i would like to get a bit of clinical exposure before going to a hospital..is that wise..plz advice

Clinics usually do not hire nurses who have no had experience working in a hospital. I would suggest you apply to hospitals and see how it goes, it's extremely difficult to find a job here. Many graduates from Canada wait 6months to a year before securing a positions post graduation. good luck

Also for teaching you would need at least 4 years of experience working in an acute care setting (hospital) in Canada.

Thank you queenb13 for you reply.. it was really helpful..if at all the hospital hire us will they give us an orientation on how things are done there..

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Yes, you'll be given on orientation. It may or may not be long enough to meet your needs.

What do you mean by clinic? A doctors office, outpatient clinic, private medical practice(such as cosmetic procedures or abortions)?

Hospital clinic jobs are hard to come by and go by seniority. Nurse educators in hospitals all have to have relevant floor experience.

I don't want to discourage you, but finding a stable job as a RN in Ontario is very hard to come by. So if you can do CRNE go for it, but I would have some other job to have an income to get by. Getting a job as a RN is really competitive, so have a back up plan.

Thanks to Janfrn,fiona59 and quing for your replies. since i have a post graduation in psychiatric nursing from india, i would like to know whether it will be considered in hospitals in canada..especially psychiatric hospital settings..i have recieved my eligilbity to write crne.. but still will my post graduation will be of any use in canada..or is it that they will consider me only as a graduate nurse..kindly advice.

I don't think any of us are qualified to answer those questions. I can tell you that until you've successfully written the CRNE, you will be paid as a grad nurse, should you find employment in the first place. That is a universal truth. You mentioned that your husband is in Canada, are you being sponsored through the family class of immigration? You personally have to have some sort of legal immigration status to get a job in the first place. As to whether your credentials from India will be valued, we can't answer that. Only a potential employer can say for sure how it will be viewed. CNO has found your education adequate for their urposes but they don't really care about employment. Their only interest is in regulation of practice.

Where in canada are you moving? from what i have seen and where i work i see alot of posting for RN's in the forensic system, and even throughout the psychiatric settings. i had little exp and i have landed a job in a forensic program ( if you are unaware Forensic nursing in ontario is basicly where Mental Health and the Law go hand in hand) Here are some links to mental health centres here in ontario but not limitted to.
