When I see the rash and the " Slapped Cheek look" we do exclude them for diagnosis only. Once they do have the rash they are no longer contaigous however we do have to have something on file that says the student did in deed have fifths disease.
I usually let all pregnant women know so they can F/U with their physician.
Last year I had a ton of fifth disease cases.
We usually find out its fifths after they have the rash.

I'm in Virginia and had a student with Fifth's disesde last week. I checked the Virginia communicable refference chart put out by the dept. of health. It said no exclusion was required. Check with your state to see if they put out something like that. It always comes in handy when a child has to be excluded and the parents are upset. "Well sorry Mr/Mrs.....but the state of Virginia says Johnny has to stay out of school for X number of days."

In Texas, no exclusion unless he or she has a fever. Student must be checked by physician to rule out measles or rubella.

We do not exclude. We do call the parent to let them know and recommend if they have any concerns, they should check with their doctor.

The Communicable Disease Guide from the Illinois Department of Public Health, 2002 states that no restrictions for cases of Fifth Disease if the child is fever-free and feeling well enough to participate in usual activites.
