Could someone please explain to me what this college really is? Is this an online school that say I wanted to take just ONE class (the ethics class), I would be able to sign up for that, take it over the summer online and then be done?
I have looked at posts on the distance learning part of the site but all these abbreviations- I cannot figure out how this school works. Is it just a school for LPN to RNs? Or can I just take one class? Also, anyone know about the prices and how the classes actually work??
Thanks!

I completed excelsiors ASN program back in 2001. It is distant learning which means you study the required material and take the required exam(s). The nursing component requires you to be an LPN or Paramedic and in some cases certain Military Corpsman specialties can also complete the program. They offer RN only and not LPN programs.

The tests that you take for Excelsior only qualify for an Excelsior degree. You wouldn't be able to transfer Ethics to any other college. Some of the classes such as English Comp that you take from CLEP would transfer to another college granted they would accept them but the majority of the Excelsior/tests/credits don't transfer to other colleges, however, once you graduate that diploma can be transferred just about anywhere to continue on with your BSN. I gradulated in 2000 and thought it was great. I would not reccomend their BSN program.

I would. If you can graduate from Excelsior consider youself good. It shows that you are an adult learner and don't have to be spoon fed in a classroom. I graduated in 1981 and have earned a masters in nursing and business since then.

For just one class, you'd probably better off taking it at a community college. I'm currently taking Ethics online at my CC.
It's a lot cheaper and more easily transferable.

Thanks- do you mind me asking what CC you attend? Is it a completely online class, meaning you take exams/papers online also.. or do you have to go to the college for exams?

Not true. Lots of colleges accept the various Excelsior exams. See this list:

(Institutions Accepting EC Exams Credit)
I was able to take most of the exams from my ASN (in progress) and transfer them to another accredited school for a BS in another field.
hey! So if I wanted to take just ONE class, would I have to pay the enormous tuition fee, in addition to the fee for the 3cr class, and the fee to take the exam??
This is my first time looking into online classes and I do not really know how they work. I have looked at their website, but it is confusing to me.
If you just want to take one exam from Excelsior, you only have to pay the fee for that exam. You don't have to pay tuition unless you are actively pursuing a degree through them.

Hello!
My boyfriend is an ex-Army medic and a Paramedic and he is working on his RN through this program. (Frankly, I am relieved to find out that it is legit - I had my doubts about an online nursing program.) ANYWAY! It seems to be taking him FOREVER becausethe cost is so high and he does not qualify for financial aid (don't ask). Is it really that expensive? Can anyone give me a rundown about the cost? Also, is there a time limit on the classes/program? He is having to take some classes over (and thus having to PAY for them again) because they "expired" or something like that.
Could someone clue me in on these details? THANK YOU!

It can get expensive (like any school).
One thing that concerns me is that you mentioned him taking classes over because they expired. Excelsior did not have a time limit on when you earned credit for your general ed's such as anatomy, microbiology, english, psych, etc. at the time I went through the program so call the school and make sure that he has to take these classes over because he really shouldn't have to unless things changed since I graduated.
I don't remember the enrollment fee but it was pretty high (around $500 maybe?) the written exams ran around $150 each and the CPNE was a whopping $1500. Nonetheless, still the best decision I ever made.
Oh, and you have 7 years from the date of enrollment in the program to finish.
ok, I have another question.
How exactly do these classes work? Are you given all the work at once and then you just work on it at your own pace and then take the test? Do you have weekly work that you need to turn in? Are there papers that you write, or multiple tests every couple of weeks? Do you have an actual instructor or is it all self-disciplined study?
Sorry, but Ive never taken classes online before.
Thanks!!
