Evening, Part time nursing programs?

I have looked and have not found anything - I think we need one in IL, but I have not seen one yet. Does not mean there are not any - just that I could not find it. Some full-timer programs have some space for you to work in them, just depends on the program.

Like livingthedream said, there aren't any part-time programs in the Chicago area. Only at the graduate level can one expect to undertake part-time coursework. At the associate and bachelor's level all the programs are full-time. I will add this however, many of the ADN programs (after pre-reqs) are only 6-8 credit hours per semester. That's generally one class but it will encompass a great deal of content. I didn't attend an associate program, but my wife did. I'm in a BSN program and my wife always teases me about the amount of coursework I do in any given semester (never less than 14 credits and this my last last semester, is 17 hours...eeek...) while she takes one class :)

I've always compared the notion of attending nursing school like nearly any other professional academic program...if you want to be a doctor, you attend medical school...full time...architecture..same thing...there are a few part time law schools out there..but the majority is full time...If you want to be a nurse...really want to be a nurse...then you'll find ways to arrange your life so you can accomplish your goal. Many of us have done it...and you can too! :)

I go evenings and I guess you could say part time, but really, it's a lot of work regardless of part time/full time. 7 credit hours now and for the last two semesters, 9 credit hours...

It's at CLC in Grayslake, IL, so not in Chicago if that is what your looking for. Depending on where your at, you may be able to drive there within an hour.

Joliet Junior College had a night/weekend program a few years ago. I don't know if it still exists, or what the waiting list would be like.

Go to the CLC website and check out the information/give them a call about class times and such. Things change by each semester. CLC stands for college of lake county and here is the link to their nursing information. I googled CLC, grayslake and got the college and then went to nursing. Good luck

Yes, all of the information is on the website, but I did send you an email as well yesterday (did you get it?). The classes may be earlier than what you are looking for...they begin at 4:30 3 night/week for the first two semesters and the second two start at 4:30 4 nights/week.

Truman college has a night/weekend ADN program- I believe it works along with UIC. I am not to familiar with how the program works, though.

i attended clc for my first semester of nursing, and i'm deciding on whether to go back or not. from what they say, it is one of the only two nursing schools in il that offer a completely evening nursing program. so it can be done.

but i will admit, it is very difficult, at least 40 hours of work a week on top of my already full-time work schedule. i woke up at 5am every morning, went to work, went to school and wouldn't get home until 9:30-10pm. on days that i didn't have classes, i was at school in the labs studying and getting home at about 8-8:30pm. fridays i would come home and crash out, wake up on most saturday mornings, go to school, and study for another 6-8hrs. the only time i saw my child was on friday and saturday evenings and sundays. i was tired and crabby most of that time as well. i'm not trying to tell you not to work and go to school, because you can do it, but it's a sacrifice for the whole family. there was only one other woman in my class who worked full-time, had kids and did classes. everyone else either only worked or had children. it's just a lot. my daughter told me it was like a black cloud was over her when i was in school, so i just needed to take time off until i could rearrange my schedule to work only part-time or not at all while i'm in class, because my child is only little once and i don't want to miss her growing up!

i wouldn't necessarily advocate clc, though. there are lots of problems with the program. it's difficult to get into, because after passing biology, chemistry and basic math, your nln pre-entrance exam score is the only criteria they go by, so you have to be a lucky test-taker. also, the failure rate on the nclex has increased in recent years, so much so that they called in a consultant last year to try to re-vamp the program because they were getting close to being on probation with the nln, who accredites clc. and on top of that, there are very subjective, in many cases unfair, testing procedures that they use and they have a high failure rate in classes because of this. you can look it up, it was in the newspapers many times last year. i passed with a b, but i feel like i was more lucky than anything.

however, supposedly they are going to be making some changes, and hopefully it will get better. i have not decided whether to continue with clc or not, but if you are considering it, i urge you to really think about what you are willing to sacrifice to attend nursing classes. and what your family is ok with. it is a huge commitment, but can pay off just as much in the end. good luck!

Oh, thanks!!!! I am VERY happy to finally be in!!! You are right...not the easiest to get in to, but I am happy, after all this work, I finally did it!!! If you are determined, you can do it...because if I can, I feel like anyone can! But I think a lot of people feel that way!

So far, so good. We had our first clinical last night and I absolutely love it!!! My husband is beginning to understand that I NEED him to help me with my daughter. I do get to see her enough, but I think it's going to change as the semester goes on!!

The were telling us in class that they are looking to make changes to the PE's, but it won't happen this semester...possibly next semester or the following? We shall see...

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I know I've kind of been a "Debbie Downer" with some of the things I've had to say about my experience with the program, but it's been more because there were certain things that I didn't know when I started and it was a huge let-down. I guess I didn't want anyone else to feel that way. I'm still considering coming back to CLC, but I have been checking into a few other programs. I'll admit, I miss being in nursing school. And I miss the cameraderie of my fellow nursing students. You won't find that anywhere else, I'm sure!

I really thought they would have changed the PE by this semester, so I'm a little sad that they haven't. You see, unfortunately I've seen some pretty bad things happen, thanks to that PE. There are a few teachers in the program that still hold tight to the theory that the PE is the best way to test students and I know they've raised a lot of opposition to changing it. But, fortunately, there are some really great teachers in the program who are against the way they do the PE, so I think in the end, they'll win out.

Good luck with it. I'll be around the message boards so if you need to vent during that time period, I'll be here to "listen!" It will be a time of high stress, but most people do come through it with flying colors. Just continue to practice, practice, practice! Go through the scenarios over and over again. That's even more important than studying the content. And most of the lab assistants are really awesome about helping you. I'm cheering you on!!!
