Hello everyone,
I have applied for nursing school for this fall and plan to get a job as an ER TECH for the summer to gain some experience and get a feel for the enviroment. Since I am a pre- nursing student and have little/no experience thus far in the medical field, what can I do to prepare myself for this job?
All inputs are welcome,
Thanks!

You'll need to do a little research and find out the requirements of your local emergency departments. Some only hire certified EMTs. I've worked in two in which there are no "techs", only paramedics. Some may want CNA training. The majority are going to want at least successful completion of some nursing student clinical experiences.
Good luck to you.

I agree...most ED techs are EMT's the others are CNA's or students AFTER their first semester...nut you need to find out first what is required in your area.
You might look into your CNA or a local EMT this summer then look for a position to get your foot in the door at a facility.
Look into volunteering!

There are many EMT courses that are offered at community colleges and tech schools. Look into them now, and depending on the schedule of classes, you may be ready to test by summer. This can open up many doors. You could become an ER tech, you could become a part time EMT for an ambulance company, or you could go to your local fire department that has an ambulance service and be "on call" for them.
See what the local ER needs from you to become a tech. A CNA course is also not a long certification, therefore if you can't start EMT before summer, see if you can start CNA now. Then that would also give you the choice to work in other units besides the ED.
Getting both a CNA and an EMT will provide you with options. Which is never a bad thing when you are in school.
Best of luck and let us know how it goes.
