Hello to all fellow Nurses.....I am a new RN. Due to personal reasons I just got my license 4 months ago, but I graduated 2006. Until now I haven't found any job yet. The web application is just so slow, and not even a 100% guaranteed that you will be picked. I am desperate for any placement just to gain experience, since most of the facilities I applied to required at least a year. How will I be able to get that experience if none of the hospitals nor facilities here in Southern California hires inexperienced nurses. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS???? :)

Unfortunately, this is a v. difficult time to be job-hunting, period, and your three-year gap since finishing school is a real handicap as far as being an attractive candidate for what jobs there are. Since you are licensed now, have you considered taking an RN refresher course? That would show potential employers that you're up-to-date and willing to go the extra mile to be competitive.
Best wishes! :balloons:

My suggestion is just to apply anywhere and everywhere. It won't hurt and this way you can look at a variety of places, settings, etc. It won't hurt either, you'll have more options!!! Good luck with the hunt!

I totally agree with elkpark. You really should start taking some refresher courses. What you don't use, you lose. Good Luck

hi...No I haven't tried any refresher course and I don't even know how and where to start it....I think I'm just gonna go to Saddleback College and see whatever they have there for me...a refresher course or any training that will do...I was off nursing for 3 years and it was definitely the downside of my whole career. I really hope for the best since the competency level now is sky high.. but thanks so much for the suggestion. I'll keep that in mind... ^_^
I definitely feel you. I spent 5 years in College just to earn my degree, then I ended up jobless. It is really frustrating yet I'm trying not to let that control me or else I'd be severely depress by now. lols I tried NEW GRAD program too, but they said I graduated like ages ago and that didn't really qualify as a NEW GRADUATE....and the other positions needed at least a year of experience, so yeah basically I don't know where I belong.....I guess back to square one... The competency level is very high now so yeah we just need to put our best foot forward, and be the prime candidate....By the way, I graduated in Philippines too, so I definitely know how it feels to get the degree there, and venture the career here in US.... but as you've said GOOD LUCK TO US...GOD BLESS ^_^
I guess for now the best thing to do is find a good backer...An RN who's working in a facility like ages already, 'coz correct me if I'm wrong the managers now prefer to have a referred RN from a current staff in that certain facility....You will have a higher percentage of getting in the facility esp. if your back-up has great working relationship/history. ^_^
Start by looking at the local junior college schedule of classes. Some of them offer courses to those who are already RN's. Look for places where you can get additional certifications to add under your belt like ACLS or PALS which I believe AHA offers. The longer you go with out working in your field the less chance you will find a job. Good Luck

I am in the same boat. I was looking for a job in a hospital but I couldn't find any vacant. So I got my Public Health Nurse certificate and started working in PH. I still looking for an opportunity to work in a hospital, but every time I applied they say that I don't have experience in acute care, I have been working in PH for about a year and to work in a hospital I have 0 experience as a nurse, but they won't consider me as a new grad because I graduate 2 years ago. So far I have a job, always I will miss the opportunity working in a hospital.
i dont know what it really means, i got first interview today and because of hiring freeze i accept the offer , they really need an experience nurse but because im a new grad RN no experience and have no idea about SNF because i graduated from the philippines. they offered me for the meantime on call, and i have 2 days orientation, 3wks training. offered 28/hr. what should i expect and need to do some help please. and they sent me to physical exam. and background check am i really hired? and after the training they will see what happen next.
