elimination of nursing position

Hello, I have worked at the same hospital for 24 years and was recently told my position was being eliminated. I have worked night shift for those 24 years, the last 3 in a weekend position. The new position I am being offered is parttime day shift. By taking this position I would be cutting my salary in half and work a shift that medically would be harmful to me. Has anyone been faced with a similar situation?

I had to go part-time at one time to prevent myself from getting laid off. Worked well for me, but im not a nightshift person either. Is there noone in your facility that prefers to work a straight day shift that works your schedule you could trade the days for nights with? If someone has the exact schedule as you, it can be a good solution to a difficult situation.

As unfortunate as this may sound, you might need to take your 24 years of experience at this hospital elsewhere and apply for jobs at other facilities. I personally wouldn't want to lose half my salary or accept a part-time position that was hazardous to my health.

It really sounds like they are trying to hand you your hat...which is awful after 24 years....you may have to look elsewhere....sorry:paw:

A 24 yr nurse there!!! You are obviously dedicated and loyal! What is wrong with corporations! Oh yeah I remember...somebody has to take a rap, or um is it we have to cut the staff starting with those with seniority to allow new nurses in at lesser pay! Sounds familiar to me!!! I have just about had it with direct care nursing in hospitals and nursing homes as the politics are always the same!

Sorry to hear of it Storm1. You don't have to work a shift that you have not worked recently due to health or family situations. You will qualify for unemployment though that is a much lessor amount wage you will earn but might give you time to look for other work with the hours that will accommodate your life. Good Luck!

Do you belong to a union? If so, have you told them? Have they done this to others before you? Sounds very fishy to me, as well.

Loyalty doesn't mean crap anymore. My late father worked for the same company for 34 years and finally retired at the age of 58, after they

started hiring younger people and paying them more than he was making and did away with his retirement. He drew only a $75 a month pension in addition to his Social Security benefit to the day he died. My older sister was demoted, then fired after 19 years with the same company. And, six years ago, I arrived at work one day to find that my supervisory position had been conveniently eliminated. When I didn't leave right away, they tried to write me up for not going out in the middle of the night to change a patient's catheter when the Policy and Procedure had always clearly stated to instruct the family to pad the bed with underpads and schedule a PRN visit the first thing in the morning. It was the first time in the 18 years I had worked in Home Health that I had ever been written up, and they finally got rid of me, for I quit. Corporations will stop at nothing to trim their payrolls...not matter how unethical or illegal it may be.

it is so true. illegal what is that? does it really matter?

I work at a Veteran's hospital, and as a federal employee, i find there are pros and cons. But, the pros far outweigh the cons, and although it is hard to find security at any job long-term, it seems that the federal or govt jobs have the greatest security for pensions and not being terminated near retirement. I am very thankful for that, and all of the nurses I work with appreciate this; especially after having worked before in the private sector.

Sounds to me like you are costing them too much to keep. A new grad will come in & do the same job for much less.

Are there other nurses who have longevity at your facility?

Also, after 24 years, I'm guessing you must know just about everyone there. Are there any management types you can talk to.

I've seen positions "eliminated", then 6 months later, that same position resurfaces. That was in a rehab facility-corporate.
