Does this bother you.. or is it just me?

Published

From the first day of class for A&P my classmate who sits next to me, kept leaning over to look at my notes I was taking during class. I really am a helpful person and if she missed something the professor said, she could ask and I would happily repeat it but to lean over and look in my notebook is very rude, disrespectful and irritating in my opinion. I may be writing something personal and not related to the classwork... not to mention she doesn't even say hello or speak to me at all.

Anyway... I though I would give little hints like covering my notes as I was writing but noooo she kept doing it, so after 3 weeks of class I had to tell her. Monday we both arrived to class early and I told her to please stop looking in my notes because its irritating however, I will be glad to answer any questions she may have if I know the answer. She immediately apologized. I really felt bad because I can tell she was embarrased, but I was going to blow it I didn't say something. Arggg

Was I wrong.

My other pet peeve is, I hate when people ask to compare their answers with mine, lets say if we have a practice exercise. If it's a group project or study group that's different but if we had a take home practice exercise I don't want to compare because it confuses me, especially if I am not sure about a question. I rather ask the professor or take my chances on my answers.

I know this sounds selfish... I really am not a selfish person and love to help other people but people will take advantage if you let them.

No, I completely agree. I have a girl like that in my lab class. She goes the extra mile to tell me that my answer is wrong and then looks on 2 other girls papers that sit in front of us. Most of the time she is the wrong one, but I hate when she looks at my answers or notes. Both of my professors made it VERY clear that they will not put up with cheating. I havent said anything to this girl yet, but I going to have to if she continues. Anyways, I dont think what you said was wrong or rude...I will probably be doing the same shortly! :)

I think you did the right thing. If she did it without thinking when you were taking an exam, it could have really dire circumstances. She needs to realize that everyone needs to take responsibility for their work.

I recently had my first exam in one of my classes, and everyone was buzzing around asking how everyone else did. My answer (which I learned from this forum) was "Better than expected." I refuse to give out numbers ever again after the chaos in my other classes over the past several semesters.

I agree that you did the right thing. I also find that very, very annoying. I've dealt with a lot of people who hover over my notes during lecture. I find it SO distracting! I've never gotten the nerve to tell them to stop, but I do drop hints like moving my notebook away, covering my notes, or even shutting the notebook altogether!!

During lab we're handed a printed out page of pre-typed notes from our teacher. It contains everything she talks about and everything we'll need to know for the test. As a personal preference, I write down random bits of information just for my own knowledge (it just helps jog my memory when it comes time to study). This one girl finds it ABSOLUTELY necessary to write down every little side note that I write down on my handout. Literally EVERYTHING I write--in the exact same areas I write them in! If I circle it, or star it, or box it, she copies me. We're not even supposed to be taking notes! The teacher literally printed out everything we need to know for our tests. I just write down stuff for my own knowledge. She also highlights everything I highlight (and nothing less or more) on handouts and labs. Drives me absolutely insane!

I wonder what would happen if you wrote "Stop copying me!" :)

Clever! I'll give it a try :)

I swear, I thought about doing that. In the past I would not have spoken up for myself but I guess as you get older you don't care about what other people think so much.

Last night in class she kept her eyes to herself. Problem solved

I was thinking the same thing, what if she tries to do this during an exam. The teacher made it very clear from the first day. If we are caught cheating he is reporting us to administration.

No. It doesn't bother me.

I don't understand why some people are so academically insecure that they're embarrassed to ask for help, but I understand there are people like that.

It doesn't bother me for someone to copy my notes. I find that I sometimes take more thorough notes so they make sense to someone other than just me when I know someone else is using them and I learn more that way as well rather than wondering what I meant later. I also find it flattering that a classmate thinks I'm smart enough to copy.

Yes that would bother me. I am like you, I am happy to help if I can, but for her to just lean over and look without any comment whatsoever is rude. I think you very nicely handled the situation.

I'll be honest...if this is the type of attitude that you are going to take in nursing school toward your classmates...do the rest of them a favor and sit by yourself in the corner somehwere...seriously...and don't expect anyone to help you out when you need it.

Getting through nursing school is a TEAM effort. The whole class has to work together to help each other through. By the time I was done, I knew the phone number of just about every student in my class...all of us were on each other's mailing lists...we helped each other understand assignments, picked up handouts for each other if one of us was home sick...passed off recorders if one of us was ill or had a sick child or had jury duty, etc.

I never would have made it without my classmates...they helped me and I helped any of them that asked.

I am not sure if you are brand-new college student...but unless you are a very difficult person that has the me-me-me mentality...if you notice that someone is looking over your shoulder during lecture...it's a "SIGN" that they need to take a quick look at what you wrote...maybe they didn't hear something or couldn't remember it long enough to write it down....b/c you never know when you'll need that same help.

Just turn your paper and let them take a quick look...because if they ASKED you...then you would be posting and complaining on how someone always talks to you during lecture and that is disrespectful to the other classmates around you as well as to the instructor.

Seriously...you cannot go through nursing school being this uptight. You'll never make it.

If you throughly read my comments, I said I don't mind helping anyone, just ask. Its very rude to look in someones books and notes without asking. However, you are correct that it would bother me if someone is always asking me questions during lecture. While I am answering them, I am also missing out on what the professor is saying, how about waiting till break or after class. I don't mind at all....I am talking about common courtesy.

btw... there are plenty of nursing students that do well without study partners. They may not have many friends... but WHO CARES.

Seriously..... I WILL make it through Nursing School and any other school I wish to pursue. Thanks for your comments.
