I went up to my high school because I needed them to send an official transcript to the college I want to attend. The secretary asked if I had a stamp, and I replied, "no". I said, "well, I thought you all just would send it. I didn't know I needed a stamp" She said, 'no, if you were a student graduating in 2009 we would send it. there is a gas station right down the street. you can go get a stamp from there." Not only that but she wanted me to supply my own envelope which I luckily had in my bag already.
I felt that was a bit rude, and laughed it off. I went and got a stamp but on the way to the second gas station (first one didn't have any) I felt that this was just going too much out of my way and she could have just mailed it off instead of making me leave and come back.

I don't think it was rude. You can't expect a school to process your paperwork for you for free. You are asking them to perform a service for you and you should expect to pay for it.
In fact, I'm surprised they didn't charge you a processing fee. Most colleges charge fees to send a transcript. You are lucky your high school did it for free asking only that that you furnish the physical supplies needed to do the job.
For you ... you are thinking it is a simple request from 1 person. But for them, it is one of many requests from the several thousands of graduates. They don't have the budget to fulfill all of their requests for free.
Yeah, she did charge me $2 on top of that
I just didn't know that I was expected to bring an my own envelope and a stamp.

I agree with llg:
Usually you send in your application along with the processing fee (depending upon the college: could be as low as $4.00 up to $65 USD) with a stamped, addressed envelope
Hope you "get in" to the college of your choice!
I was given a form (with the address provided)from my college that I give to my high school. I knew nothing about needing an envelope and a stamp.

You didn't know the procedure because you hadn't done it before and no one had told you. She wasn't rude for following her procedure. It seems like two separate issues.

I would expect they would charge me a processing fee, and it would include the stamp, envelope, ink, whatever it takes to get the transcript out.
Did you bring your own ink cartridge?

I agree! If you are paying a fee the stamp and envelope should be included! I live in Ohio now & I went to high school and college in Florida & I payed the fees for my transcripts online ... So what if they needed an envelope & a stamp to process my transcripts? What... I'd have to mail that to them too? LOL

At least she told you where you could get a stamp nearby...
It sucks, but as everyone's said, it's par for the course in many institutions and something you'll have to get used to.

I've never had to provide an envelope and stamps for transcripts. I just filled out the form and sent in the fee. One of my schools even went from charging a fee to free. I didn't believe the admin assistant who told me that and was surprised to see it written on the form. I hope they send the transcipt. I've paid for transcripts before and the recipient never receives them. This happens with the same school. So far the issue has never been pressed so I never bring it up again.

It's a strange situation all together. My high school sent out our official transcripts to any institution for free, so did my community college. The only time I had to pay was at my University, but even then I never had to supply any envelope or stamp. They would just mail it out for me a few days later.
What happens if you need an official, sealed transcript and there's an influx of requests? Does everyone wait in line just for someone to stick a seal on their envelope? I wouldn't think they would file envelopes so that they could stuff them and seal them later. I don't know...maybe it wasn't rude, but IMO it is kind of stingy and it seems very impractical.

I agree. How would anyone know prior to going into the school that they need their own envelope and stamp? That should be provided for you. I thought it was a bit rude to make me leave and go to the gas station for a measley stamp.
