  1. I am currently taking A&P 1 at Miami University in Ohio. I am trying to get my pre-requisites done before applying to their ADN Nursing program. But I am just wondering what types of material is or was covered in your A&P classes. I know that A&P is not easy by all means... but at my school they treat us like we are going to be doctors. The book we are using is Hole's Anatomy and Physiology (12 edition) by Shier, Butler, & Lewis. The lab manual is Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual 9th edition (Cat Version) by Marieb. Here are the chapters we have/are covering: Chapter 1 - Intro to Human Anatomy & Physiology: This chapter covered what was the difference between anatomy and physiology, level of organization, metabolism, homeostasis, negative & positive feedback, body cavities, thoracic and abdominopelvic membranes (pleural membranes, pericardial, etc.), brief summary of the organ systems, anatomical position, relative positions (superior, lateral, proximal, etc.), body sections (sagittal, transverse, etc.) body regions (epigastric region, umbilical region, RUQ, LLQ, acromial, digital, mental, etc.) Ok that chapter was a lot of info but I didn't think it was too bad! Chapter 2 - Chemical Basis of Life: This chapter covered matter, elements, atoms, atomic structure, isotopes, molecules and compounds, bonding of atoms, chemical reactions, acids, bases, salts, acid & base concentrations, inorganic substances, organic substances, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, DNA. Ok this chapter was way over my head! I never have taken chemistry in my life! Chapter 3 - Cells: cell membrane cellular adhesion molecules, cytoplasm (ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, vesicles, mitochondria, lysosomes, peroxisomes, centrosome, cilla and flagella, microfilaments and microtubles) cell nucleus, diffusion, osmosis, filtation, active transport, endocytosis, exocytosis, transcytosis, cell cycle, interphase, mitosis ( prophas, metaphase, anaphase, telophase), cytoplasmic division, stem cells. And again over my head! Chapter 4 - Cellular Metabolism: anabolism, catabolism, emzymes, cofactors & coemzymes, regulation of metabolic pathways, energy for metabolic recations, ATP Molecules, release of chemical energy, cellular respiration, glycolysis, anaerobic reactions, aerobic reactions, citric acid cycle, electron transport chain, carbohydrate & lipid storage, genes, DNA replication, genetic code, RNA molecules, codons, mutations. Over my head! Chapter 5 - Tissues: epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous, etc *OK I am tired of typing! LOL* This wasn't too bad! Chapter 10 - Nervous System 1- Basic Structure & function This Chapter was a lot of information (We are up to here as of 7-16-09) Chapter 11 - Nervous System 2 - Division of the Nervous System Chapter 12 - Nervous System 3 - Senses Chapter 13 - Endocrine System Chapter 22 - Reproductive System Chapter 23 - Pregnancy, Growth & Development I have had only a WEEK to learn the first 3 chapters! I have my 2nd exam tomorrow on chapters 4,5, & 10... I have only had a WEEK to learn this material also! I know it is a summer class but in reading all the other posts about the A&P classes students took... they didn't seem this difficult! I have read people on here suggesting a coloring book. In this class we don't use figures at all so I don't know how that would help me other than for studying the body regions. Someone posted a study guide with notes that they took from there A&P class... I looked them over and none of them helped me for this A&P class. Therefore I am wondering if this material is the normal/average A&P class. PLEASE LET ME KNOW! If all the classes are like this at all the other schools... I WILL NEVER MAKE IT AS A NURSE! Thanks, Elizabeth
  2. :fnypst: I agree! If you are paying a fee the stamp and envelope should be included! I live in Ohio now & I went to high school and college in Florida & I payed the fees for my transcripts online ... So what if they needed an envelope & a stamp to process my transcripts? What... I'd have to mail that to them too? LOL
  3. Check out the website www.fetchbook.info This website is a search engine of all the websites like ebay, amazon, half, etc. and it finds the cheapest price available online for that book. You can search books by keyword, title, author, and isbn #. This website has saved me alot of money. This is a website every college student should know regardless of their majors!
  4. I had a D on my first exam. Last night while going over the answers on the scantron I found that there were a few errors. I was having a mechinal penical malfunction on the exam day! LOL So I marked a few answers correct and I got it wrong because I didn't erase well enough. So I showed my professor today and he changed my grade! Now I have a C! I know it ain't wonderful to all you 4.0 students but to me it is passing and at my school I only need a 2.5 GPA... So I am so HAPPY! LOL Only four weeks left! I hope I pass.... As of now I think I will be OK! Thanks for everyone's advice! :heartbeat
  5. I think I will be ok! ( I keep telling myself that) LOL A 3.8 GPA? Wow! Miami University (Ohio) Only requires a 2.5 or better. So I am good if I make C's in the sciences. I wish you the best of luck too! So what all do you have left to do? And when do you plan on starting the nursing program?
  6. What school do you guys go to? LOL I'm in A&P I now and so far we are covering chemistry, cells, and cellular metabolism (which to me seem like it has a lot to do with nutrition) previously to taking this class I don't know much about these things. In my school it seems beneficial to take chemistry and nutrition before A&P I. For the nursing program at my school chemistry, A&P I and A&P II, and Microbiology are the only classes needed besides English I & English II and psychology. The program didn't seem that bad until I started the A&P I class. I am really considering taking nutrition and a fundamental chemistry class before taking A&P I again (if i fail it). I am so stressed! I really do wonder if it is harder because I go to a University.
  7. Thanks for your advice! It is overwhelming in the summer. I have already completed two other courses this summer... English I & Pre-algebra (to brush up) They weren't too bad. I am just wondering if my school's A&P is harder than other schools. Currently we are doing the stuff that I consider to be boring. Cells & cellular metabolism, chemistry. My labs are even worse! I know plenty of students that have passed A&P at other schools and they weren't the smartest. I don't have much chemistry or nutrition background... So A&P seems really hard. I guess I am going to attempt to finish the class and if I fail I will just take it over in the fall. At my school if I retake the same class my bad grade & GPA will be replaced with new (better) grade and change my GPA. I am just going to take it slow and try to make the best possible grades for my prerequisites. I am not going to cram all the hard science classes together in the fall. I am thinking about going part-time just so I can focus on just a few classes. I have three kids also so I already feel overwhelmed!
  8. I'm new on here & I need some advice. I am a pre-nursing student and I'm trying to get into Miami University's (Ohio) 2 year nursing program. I have a few credits completed for the prerequisites of the program. I'm currently in the summer class for A&P I. I just took my first exam on Monday 7/6/09 and I did really bad! :angryfire I studied all weekend (mind you it was 4th of July weekend) and I couldn't absorb all the material. I have only had three lecture classes and 2 lab classes. In class we went over three chapters that covered the (1) intro to human anatomy & physiology which included body regions, terminology, organ systems, body cavities, homeostasis, metabolism, etc. (2) Chemical Basis of Life (3) Cells. I have five weeks left and I don't even know the first three chapters 100% yet! I'm so stressed! I have a Lab exam coming up also! Lab is even harder! I have never worked with microscopes in my life! And my lab teacher tells us to follow our lab manuals and do the activities! I don't even know how to operate the microscope! She wants us to be able to identify each stage of mitosis on a slide! I can barely see the slide with my 20/20 vision let alone identify the organelles of a cell! I also have to measure the field size of the slides. It feels like my professors feel that we are all pre-med! After taking this class I have been doubting my major! Even though I have always wanted to be a nurse! I think If I keep getting bad grades in this class I will withdraw and try to take this class in the fall when I have more time to learn the material. I still need A&P II, chem, and micro. Are these classes just as hard? Any advice? Thanks! :heartbeat
