Do you need to keep your initial license active?

I had my ADN in MI, and I got my initial RN license in MI. However, I never practiced a day in MI. I moved to IN right after I got my MI RN license. Since then I have an IN RN license by endorsement. My MI license has been lapsed since 2019.  Should I resume my MI license if I want to move to CA and practice in CA? Or IN BOA should have my education records from MI already?

anyone has similar experience? Thanks in advance!

I did not maintain my active RN license where I also earned it first in MI.  I maintain WA, OR, and CA licenses for RN and NP because these are the states where I would be most interested in practicing.  I live and work in OR.

CA license is the only exception where I would say if you have established it then keep it up since the process of getting it is long and can be more complicated.

So when you lapsed you MI RN license, and you got other three states’ all at once? Was MI still attesting your education years after your MI lapsed? Or you don’t need MI BON to be involved in the future endorsement?

Endorsing to any other state should not be an issue, except California. Endorsing to California seems to be a lot more complicated and time consuming. I have never tried and have no desire to endorse to California. It is best to contact California BRN (if you can get ahold of them) to find out what is needed to endorse to California.

You do not need to reactivate your MI license. You will be endorsing from IN.

One does need to list all licenses held and end date on most BON applications.

CA Licensure by Endorsement information.   Be aware that takes long time for CA to issue license due to volume of requests and backlog; very difficult to reach them by phone.

I am not be able to move to anywhere until the fall of 2023. I hope it would get done by then.

Some states need the info from your original state of licensure, but that does not have to be an active license. Some states require info on ALL licenses you've had and are pending. But no need to have them all active. That gets expensive!
