Dismissed from nursing program

I haven't experienced this personally, but while in the nursing program, I knew of several people who were dismissed from the program for failing 2 classes. They weren't accepted to any other programs in the area due to that. They eventually changed their majors....two changed to health information management and one changed to juvenile criminal law. I know this isn't encouraging at all. I wish you the best of luck.

So sorry to hear about the run of bad luck that you had. I know this will not help because I am in Ohio but at my school if you fail, you have to repeat the quarter. And if you fail the same quarter for a second time then you have to wait a year to get back into the nursing program et start over. You can not just pick up where you left off. If they ask why you failed, I would tell them about the wreck you had et the death in the family. To me, that is all they need to know.

My program has 1,600 applicants for 120 seats, of that only 40 graduate.

Application to graduation ratio is 0.025 % success rate. [2 failures and you are out]

Your situation is not unique. Nursing schools across the country have really been raising the bar consistantly for many years, long and short of it...it is really tough!

With that said, if you really want to pursue it, then absolutly apply to some other programs, do not let set backs keep you from your goals. As for disclosing your previous experience, ...i always say honesty is the best policy. However if they don't ask, don't tell!

As for other nursing programs you have many options; Schools are abundent.

Also, you might think of finishing your degree, then applying to a Second Degree option for Nursing....That's what my cousin did, in fact after he got his 1st degree he got hired by the hospital [for a non ursing job] ..then they paid for the second degree option!!!

More than one way to skin a cat!!

If nursing is what you really want, then you may want to consider enrolling in Excelsior College. There is a lot of info in the distance learning forum. You may be eligible to enroll if you have completed at least 50% of traditional nursing school. But let me warn you right away that it is not for everybody. You have to be VERY motivated and disciplined, you cannot be a procrastinator, and you need to be able to learn the material independently. You can study on your own time and schedule your exams at Pearson Testing Centers when you feel you are ready, but you also have to take a 3-day practical exam at the end which costs $1800 and has about a 60-70% pass rate. many programs will not take you as a "dismissed student" per the qualifications stated on various sites. if you really want to be a nurse, try again from square one at another school without using your previous classes. this would require to take some classes over that you have passed and bearing that financial burden.

there may be some programs that allow a student with your status but through my research i haven't seen any. either way, best of luck to you.

i was dismissed from a nursing program because i failed two nursing courses and i wanted to know has this ever happened to you and were you able to get into other nursing program? if so please give me the name of the nursing program. i currently live in georgia and i am willing to travel any were to become a nurse. i have talk to alot of program in georgia and they will not talk a student with two nursing failures. i failed my nursing courses because i had a death in the family and i was into a car accident and i became very depressed and anxious. also, should i tell other nursing program that i was depressed and anxious because i feel as thought alot of nursing programs would look down on that because you have to very strong handle a nursing program. please help me i don't know what to do i really want to be a nurse.

I was not aware that the suggestion by I am Julia was possible. It does seem to offer an alternative of last resort, provided one has the money and wants to invest the time. At least you would have a good idea about what is expected of you this time. I was always under the impression that you must disclose all previous education when you apply to any school, and that failure to do so would be grounds for dismissal in itself. But if it can be done, there's the way to skin this cat. Good luck to you. Please keep us posted.

Is there not a way that a college can find out if you previosuly attended anywhere else if you don't disclose it???

I think that most programs at least the one I went to-Napa Valley College in California wont let you come back if you fail twice. I assume that this was a RN program? If so, I know of a few people who failed the RN program during the 3rd/4th semester. (in California after 2 semesters in the RN program you are eligible to take LVN exam) They were then eligible to take the LVN exam but they had to get the paperwork filled out from the nursing program dean and she had to send it in. I think the application was on the california nursing board website. So maybe your state offers the same? Anyways, they passed their LVN exam and then got into a program for LVN to RN which was 2 semesters. And in between they worked at a hospital and got experience so they were even more prepared for the RN program a second time. Just an Idea. Good Luck

they could certain find out if the student gave a reason to probe. it can be done successfully, however the op would need to be very careful not to disclose this to anyone ever.

I understand what it's like to want something and not get it, so you have my sympathy. Most people who want to be nurses feel that way because they want to help people. There are so many jobs in the hospital that fit that criteria, that maybe you should take a look at them. Physical therapists help people to walk again, RT's help people to breathe easier. What about ultrasound? Showing a young couple the first pictures of their new baby has to be rewarding. I'm not saying to give up on nursing, but it's certainly not your only option. And as much as I hate to use a cliche, when one door closes, another opens and sometimes that turns out to be a whole lot better. Also, if you do choose to go with Excelsior College as someone suggested, talk to your nursing board first. Not all states accept them completely...you may have to do some additional work to get your license.
