Did you have to take Calculus as a Pre-Req?

Published

Hey! I am going into my Junior year of High School, and I aspire to be a Nurse. So with that said, I am trying to figure out my classes for next year.

I already know that I need Statistics, so I am taking AP Stat next year.

But, what I don't know is that if I will need to take Calculus when I get to College and as a Pre-Req, for the Nursing program.

Did you have to take Calculus at all in college or as a Pre-Req?

Thanks

Heck no. I took Algebra II and tapped out. You will never use anything beyond basic mathematics in your bedside practice. You'll need stats to help you understand research. Otherwise, don't worry about advanced math courses unless you have a specific interest in them. They're not needed for nursing.

The only math classes that have been required for the programs I've applied to were Statistics and College Algebra. I was never very strong in math, however I did end up going onto pre-calc and I'm taking Calc 1 this semester for my associates in Biology.

I think if you have the opportunity and preparedness to take Calc, do it. Calc really reinforced all of my algebra skills and in the end, extra education never hurt anyone!

I have not seen a nursing program that requires calculus as a prerequisite course. Most nursing programs at the baccalaureate level require either College Algebra, Statistics, or both. I'm educated at the associate's degree level and have not yet taken a college level math course.

For an ADN (2 year degree) the highest math you'll need will be intermediate algebra 1 and 2 probably. For a BSN you will need those plus statistics and statistics research. Best of luck!

I am in a BSN program, and the only two courses I needed were College Algebra and Statistics.

No, we were only required to have College Algebra for the ADN program. Stats is required for the BSN.

My school does not require any pre-req math course. Instead, we take a 2cr "Math for Healthcare Providers" course that teaches us conversions to metric system and figuring out medication doses. I took calculus in HS and in college (because I declared a major) and they didn't transfer anything out of it. Waste of time :) We do, however, have to take a Statistics course.
