I have been applying for jobs and had no luck so I decided to redo my cover letter and resume when I found out that a friend had gotten an interview at the same hospital I had applied to and the same floor I did my preceptorship. When she told me about she had interviewed on the same floor I precept on and that the nurse manager had more interviews to do, I then decided to email my cover letter and resume directly to the floor manager and she immediately call me for an interview and remember who I was. But the problem is that I feel bad b/c I feel like I double cross my friend but I was told that I shouldn't feel this way b/c its all about business. What are your opinions on this?

Of course you are going to feel sad about this, but all is fair in love, war, and the job market. I have been "surprised" more than once when somebody one upped me in the rat race. I am always looking out to help others and have had to learn the hard way that people are not going to reciprocate. Look out for Number 1 first. Then, help your buddy. You know, like the oxygen mask on a plane.

It's all about who you know and using what resources you have available to you to the max. Do what you need to do to get a job, as long as it isn't illegal.

As long as you didn't speak poorly of your friend to the manager and/or sabotage her application in any way, you didn't double-cross her. You applied for an open position that your friend applied for as well...and the ultimate decision of who gets hired is not up to you or the friend, but the manager.
Your friend may not see things the same way though and may feel hurt at what you did...unfortunately there's not much you can do to prevent that. Even though you didn't double-cross her, she'll have to work through her feelings...and honestly, your friendship may change because of it. Or it may not.
Best of luck in both departments.

i agree, as long as you didn't bad talk your friend. At the end of the day, the decision was up to the employer, and you were a better fit!
congrats!!!!!!
I called her last nite to see if she had found a job and her answer was yes... at the same hospital she and I interviewed at. So she ended up getting the position but I have no hard feelings. I was just feeling bad because of her attitude towards me after I emailed my qualifications to get myself a interview.
