I bought my first desktop in 1986. My second computer was also a desktop. They were nice, but my current computer is a laptop. I prefer the laptop because I don't need to be at a desk to use it. I usually have it literally in my lap while I sit on the couch with my feet up. Also, I can take it with me when I go on vacation. My next computer will be a laptop -- probably a size smaller than the one I currently have to make it lighter to carry around.

I currently (and am typing on now), is a Sony Vaio TR3A notebook. Its tiny, with a small screen, and I love it. I've had it for two and a half years and it still working just great. Its wireless and has been to Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and all over the US.

I paid $2000 for it in 2004 and my next computer will also be a laptop. Like llg, I take my computer with me almost everywhere.

BTW, I did my BSN and MSN online and this computer rocks.

We have one of each at home. The laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) was chosen originally when we wanted a small, fairly lightweight computer to take to China when we adopted our daughter. That was in Sept of 2005. I'm taking it to school every day now, and find it VERY useful to have a computer of my own to use on campus. It's handy to tie into the local wireless network & email/web surf.

If you won't be using a computer "on the road", get a desktop. They are often less expensive, far cheaper to maintain/repair/upgrade than a notebook computer.

I use a laptop. I bought a laptop because I'm in the military and have to travel often. Its just more easier for me due to limited space.

I too have both but since buying my laptop, I rarely use a desktop. My daughter is on a premier select soccer team and we do a lot of traveling. During PN school I took it with me on these trips and did school work in the hotel room. Now I'm an LPN transitioning to RN and will be doing the same thing this spring when the season starts. My laptop is an HP Pavillion, nothing hugely fancy but everything I need and didn't cost a fortune. I love it!

desk top cheaper and if you are going to use it more at home may be all you need

lap top is handy, can be used almost anywhere..caution..never get in the habit of putting it on top of the car when you put othe stuff in..

Dude...get a laptop! Mobility, Mobility and yes, Mobility. DO NOT buy a cheap unit such as bargain deal at WallyWorld. Go with name brand, like Dell, HP or Sony, etc. If you have the money...go with a MAC. Most nurses like me can't afford a new mac...LOL

Seriously....get a good laptop and never regret it. Make sure there are lots of USB and periphreal ports all over that puppy!!!!!

ERDude

Laptops are good if you're going to be moving around alot and need to travel with it, theyre also a great space saver..however if ANYTHING goes wrong it will cost a fortune to fix whereas PC's can be replaced in parts eg keyboards.

I stood on my laptop once (dont ask) the screen smashed and it was more expensive to fix than buy a new computer!
