Dealing with Judgmental Co-Workers

Hi all!

I've been working a full-time job in the arts for years while taking one pre-req at a time in order to apply to nursing school. I finally submitted my first application to a program and feel so relieved to finally be (hopefully) starting school next Spring!

I couldn't be happier about this career change, but my co-workers are really bothering me. Everyone's reaction about my desire to become a nurse has been "EW! WHY would you ever want to do that! What a GROSS job!

Of course, I know very well that they have no idea what they are talking about, but I have to work with these people for at least another 6 months! Any suggestions about how to deal with them?

    That's not a problem. That's just people expressing their opinions. Change the subject if it bothers you. :)

    They are your co-workers not your friends. Be polite with them but who cares if they are judging you?

    This could help with breaking away from this life, as you move on to a different one.

    AS far as how to deal with it, remember, not all can deal with blood, etc. The very thought that someone would choose to do so, is well, shocking. So some of the reactions could be part of that. They chose the field they are working in and Nursing is rather a big change. The other possibility is negativity. Your moving on, and they are not. Feeling a little 'green.'

    So, just change the subject if it comes up. The comments show how much or what kind of interest they have in the topic. Laugh off what ever they say and move on. Enjoy what time you do have there with positive topics. Get them to talk about them selves and leave your future out of the conversations. If they have issues with it, it will help to avoid dealing with negativity. No one has time for negativity.

    I would say well then it's a good thing you are not going into nursing, but that doesn't bother me. Or you could just ignore it. Don't let it phase you, once you start your nursing programs you'll have much more important things to worry about
