CSULA's ABSN program Summer 2019

Fingers crossed for this week! I read somewhere on the program site that final decisions should be made by March 29 at the latest, but in past years it hasn’t taken that long. The wait is bittersweet because on the one hand you really don’t have to do anything, but at the same time you really can’t do anything lol.

And about the whole loan dilemma mentioned earlier, the way I see it the investment isn’t that high for the prospective return. If accepted, I will be combining government and private loans, but this will be a lifelong career with consistent opportunities for growth, so for those of us in it for the long haul I believe it is every bit worth the initial investment (though I may not feel that way in the moment when I am signing off on that loan haha).

I'm sure it may have been mentioned in a thread or application form somewhere, but does anyone know if the titers, BLS, fire card, etc. are due by orientation? I am debating getting a head start on those in case of the best.

@Schwamus86 I'm not sure if they are due by orientation but it's best if you get your titers done asap in case you no longer have immunity (the hep B series takes a few months to complete)

You and @etchensketch said it! I am a slave to my inbox, though I know it's more likely to be a phone call first...

AND. I don't check allnurses all day, so when I check in and see like five messages on this board, you can imagine where my brain goes! That everyone has gotten a call and then I freak out. Then I read that everyone is just as anxious as me with the lack of results and feel slightly better. Just slightly.

I have to agree with you about the loan issue. It is going to be tough wherever we end up, but so worth it in the end. I will also be looking for government and private loans and hopefully a scholarship or two. You are correct that there are so many opportunities in nursing; it certainly is not a stagnant career. We might have to "pay our dues" at first, but the upward mobility is there, which is very exciting.

I am also in my 30s, @jleegato, and did not save a ton for this like I should have. But I am grateful to have familial support for the basics (living expenses, books, etc.). I am saving as much as I can now while working since I know I'll have to drop to per diem (or no work) when I get into school.

The student received a NURSE Corps Scholarship from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources & Services Administration. Full tuition and more! Doesn't sound like a bad deal, especially when many have goals to work with underserved populations as it is.

I'm not sure if they are due then, but it would definitely be wise to start looking into it. I believe the fire card we need is the blue one. You can get BLS through an AHA certified vendor. There are multiple locations and times for this, and it only takes about 4 hours.

Yes - it is a phone call if you get in and waitlist etc emails get sent out a day or so later- or at least that’s what happened last year.

As far as titers go,I echo the sentiment that they should probably have been assessed several weeks ago. But it’s also not too late to get them started after you hear from the program. Just get on it as soon as you get the call.

@Smiles_34 You can leave the ‘checking allnurses every 15 minute to me.” Haha. If and when you and I get into the program, I’ll commiserate to/with you in person about how I/we should have saved more.
