My CPR card just ran out on July 8th. It is through the American Heart Association. I was just wandering if there is any grace period for this card, and if I can renew it, or if I have to take the whole 8 hour class???

Thanks

American Heart will honor the card until the end of the month. If you need to renew you can still take a class until the end of July. If you wait until August, however, you will have to take the Recogntion course (8 hour)

I just found the answer. All AHA/ECC course cards are valid for two years until the end of the month in which the card was issued

"The Course Director is responsible for allowing students to proceed in an initial or renewal course if he/she does not have a current Provider card.

Students who present an expired Provider card or do not possess a Provider card may challenge a renewal course but will not be given the option of remediation. They will need to repeat the entire Provider Course if they cannot successfully meet the course requirements when evaluated."

Your employer may take a different view, however!!!! If JACHO pulls your file, and things like that are out of date, the hospital will get dinged, so it behooves management to be extremely vigilant about it.

Keeping those CPR, etc., cards current is really important.

Just an FYI- there were major revisions to the AHA CPR Guidelines released in the last couple of months. This affects all AHA and American Red Cross CPR classes. So, it may be worthwhile to take the entire CPR course this time around.

Thanks guys for the info. I just talked to my nurse manager (I start work next week) and she said that I just need to get it renewed by the time I am off orientation which is 3 months. She also said that the re-cert is longer anyways due to the new guidelines.
