Community college - RN program

I attend CCBC- Catonsville's RN program. CCBC- Essex also has an RN program. CCBC- Dundalk has an LPN program.

My GPA upon admission was a 4.0 with all pre-req's completed. They base admission on pre-req's completed, GPA, and the TEAS entrance exam. Your science GPA is weighed more heavily than the rest ( or so they say). There is no waiting list so if you are not accepted the 1rst time around you must reapply.

AACC is almost the same as CCBC. Based only GPA, science more than others. No TEAS test give. All prereq's must be completed prior to application which is only good for that semester's admission. You have to reapply if you don't get in. My GPA was 4.0, lowest known GPA in my class was 3.5.

Okay so if my GPA was 3.2 and I wasn't accepted the first time I applied, there would be no way for me to be accepted unless I brought my GPA up??

It would all depend on that semester's cut off GPA wise. There's really no way to know...one semester could accept a 3.2 and the next could accept nothing lower than a 3.5...it all depends on who is applying that semester and the GPA's.

I suppose if you were not accepted the 1rst time the best thing to do would be to bring up your GPA especially if any of your sciences are low. If you apply to a school that has a pre-entrance exam ( like the TEAS) focus on doing very well on that also.

Also it was my experience that AACC will take a C student in county before an A student from out of county.

I read several negative post regarding community colleges. Could someone explain what issue they have with community colleges vs private colleges.

Hi everyone! I wanted to know what did you mean by GPA? Are the colleges going by your high school GPA if so my science are too low. How will I be able to bring up my GPA and sciences.

My thoughts are that the complaints here with regard to CCs are similar to the complaints about all nursing schools, its not the hard work but all the politics and drama. That said I love CCs because they are cheap, quick and again despite all the extra BS I felt that my education experience was excellent. At a CC you can get your RN in two years and thats a huge plus if you are an adult that needs to continue working while earning your BSN.

One of my frustrations was the county resident preferences that some of the better CC programs here have that requires them to accept an in county C-student before an out of county A student.

I could be wrong but I don't recall any of the local CCs even looking at high school grades. As far as I know they only use your college grades you earned on the pre-reqs. Good luck!

Hi there! Thanks for replying. Well then that's great if your right I will start my LPN school next week. I want to take my pre-reqs after I'm finished this Program. Can you take pre-reqs at any CC and use them to apply at another CC. I just can't go to a CC in my area because there are waiting list (Takoma Park, MD) for the ADN-RN program, this is what I really want to do.

Check first but in most cases I have found them to be very good about accepting pre-req classes from other CCs. The problem is that they all want something just a little different so in applying to several LPN to ADN bridge programs I have taken several classes that are only good for one particular school. If you are looking in the Balto. metro area send me a pm when you are ready because while my info will be a year old I might be able to give you some pointers on what I have found and I've looked into them all! Congrats on getting working toward your LPN, the year will fly by!
