CHICAGO VS. TEXAS

IM TRYING TO DEBATE ON MOVING TO TEXAS. I'VE BEEN IN CHICAGO ALL MY LIFE AND READY FOR A CHANGE. IM TIRED OF CHICAGO'S WINTERS. I DONT HAVE ANYTHING HOLDING ME BACK FROM MOVING. MY CURRENT JOB, I'VE BEEN THERE FOR ALMOST 14 YRS. SO WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT WOULD MAKE ME LOVE TEXAS WHEN I COME TO VISIT THAT'S DIFFERENT FROM CHICAGO? IM LOOKING TOWARDS MAYBE IRVING TEXAS.:nurse:

Having transplanted to the DFW area from a major NE city over 14 years ago, I think the ONLY thing that can make you love Texas more than Chicago would be the lower cost rent. Be sure to visit in August before you make your final decision-if you can survive the heat (and it ain't a dry heat), you might do OK. One word of advise is to not burn your bridges when you leave.

Thanks for your response, lower rent definately sounds good to me right now, especially paying the amount of rent you pay for mortgage here in chicago. I plan to visit in july. If i decide to move, it will be with grace.

LOL! Dallas in July - that's a true test of endurance. But there are other fabulous things to look forward to also.

Here in Houston, we are actually proud of how user-unfriendly our city is. If you don't believe me, take a look at this website http://www.houstonitsworthit.com/your_HIWI_submissions Heck, it gets so jungle-hot here in H-town that downtowners don't even venture out on the surface - they use underground (air conditioned) tunnels instead.

That being said, it doesn't stop people from moving here... doesn't even slow them down. And each newcomer seems to bring at least 2 cars with them - "what do you call 3 million cars placed end-to-end? Houston freeways on July 4 weekend".

Srsly, come on down - if you survive July & August you'll love it.

HouTx,

Can you tell me how the job market is is Houston right now? I also live here in Chicago, living here for a year and my boyfriend is ready to leave. We've settled on Houston because I'm originally from Louisiana and his mother is in San Antonio, and its perfectly situated in the middle So we were hoping to move sometime in 2011-2012. I'm Peds RN working at pediatric hospital, so peds is where I would like to stay. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. :)

You being from Chicago,HMMM you might want to consider staying,or going to another country, that how bad it is.I have since gone back to wisconsin, and for my winters im here in the virgin Islands.the way it's going may not even come back to the mainland, because the weather is starting to suck all over in the states.check out group one,and the rest of the crap that goes on in that state. The driving, and the pay is crappy.just check it out,and see for your self.

I grew up in Chicago and would never move back, I live 2 hours east of Dallas where there is no Group one. I also no people from the Dallas area that have no problems with Group One.

What you WILL miss anywhere outside of a city like Chicago or NY is the FOOD. Dallas has lots of great places but nothing like the variety of ethnic foods available in Chicago.

We have plenty of nursing jobs at my facility.

Good luck in whatever you decide. IMO the milder winters out weigh the hot summers.....

you are right,if your from the projects in chicago and like to be fat as a cow to fit in down there.Oh and go back 20 years in progress. The only thing that has right in texas is cows, and horses. When I first did texas a friend of the family convinced me to do texas.I sounded good, but when I got there it was very diffrent, than the rest of the us,except for georgia.Trust me I know I was a travel nurse for about 10 years. That friend of mine we don't talk to this day for that texas crap.with freinds like that who needs enemies.

Are you a psych nurse or a patient? I have been in San Antonio for the majority of my life and have travelled all over the world as well as 40 of the 50 states. I love central texas and probably will live here forever, I would only choose a white sand beach or snowy mountains if I was to ever move.

Huh? I'm not even sure what you're trying to say.

chill1965, we're glad you moved back. Texas is a great place to live and work. I'm originally from the north and would never go back.

Moved from Chicago to Euless, Texas. LOVE IT!!! Been here for 4 years. Only one bit of advice: DO NOT MOVE TO IRVING. I hated the 6 months I lived there. Move to the HEB (Hurst, Euless, Bedford) area just west of Irving.
