Change of Shift?

Published

I work nights 7p-7a. Most of the day staff arrives at 0640. When day shift comes in they ALWAYS bring their breakfast and eat it before getting report. Then they come out of the staff lounge and can't/won't get on the automated voice-care that records all our patient reports. So then I can end up giving report 2-3 different times on my all my patients. When we come in for night shift we are ready to go, no one is sitting there eating dinner instead of getting report. It is rare if I make it out of there before 0730. All because they have to eat their grits and biscuts.

Does this happen to anyone else? It drives me bonkers.

A nurse sat at the station eating her breakfast and did not look up or give the time of day to a resident's family member who was standing right in front of her one morning. The woman caught my eye and I motioned with my eyes that the nurse for her family member was the one eating breakfast. I could not have answered her question because I didn't work with that group that night. I was very perturbed. There was no way the nurse could have not seen or heard the family member. To answer your question, yes, this happens often, especially in places where mgmt does not establish and maintain high standards for conduct from shift to shift or for overall conduct. Very selfish and inconsiderate, just like the people who consistently come to work late.

As a day shift nurse, I am proud to say that this ritual does not happen in our unit. If am working, I am usually ready to take report at 7 am sharp which is the official start of my shift. This takes discipline, personal accountability, professional work ethics and respect for your co-workers. Please forgive me, but tardiness is one of my pet peeves. At the end of my shift , I expect the same from the night shift.

Hi

I am night shift; I am happy to say that this does not happen on my Unit. Everyone is ready for report at 0700 & some even earlier.

On the occasion that I might float, I am sorry to say that most of the other units are like yours.!!

I think that type of behavior is so unprofessional & disrespectful of co-workers!!

We actually have a form we use for report & if someone is late or what ever we just leave them the paper.

Same problem here, only they are also eating supper when I arrive. Between eating and smoke breaks, I'm amazed they get any work done!

I am a bit confused (it doesn't take much:uhoh3:) anyway why do you need to wait on them if you have already recorded on voice care? Any updates you can give on there. We use voice care, and we don't wait on the next person.

It's the exact opposite where I work - days is early - on time - ready to take report - nights comes in, they are fighting over the assignment board=taking their sweet time - sorting out the food they brought in for the the night fesitivities (they take turns cooking)....

your mgr needs to get involved - there is no excuse for them eating and not taking report

Tell me about it. I work 3-11 shift and got mandated a couple of weeks ago to work 11-7. The day shift is notorious for showing up late. I was dead tired waiting for my replacement to show up at 7:20!

Very well said! :yeah: It comes down to high standards from mgt and the nursing staff itself - I'm shocked this is tolerated by mgt.

No, that doesn't happen on my unit. Usually they get in at 710, change, get breakfast burritoes and have to catch up with each other's night. It is truly frustrating. Now I just find them and give report, regardless of whether or not they're shoveling food in while hearing about each other's wedding/baby/vacation/boyfriend/shopping plans.

The unit I used to work on this happened all the time! The day shift would show up late then sit in their and chit chat and not come out until 0730 or later some days.

Give you an example: One day their were 3 yes 3 day nurses scheduled and 2 SA's to our 2 nurses for the noc shift. Anyhoo one nurse had 2 pts to review, one nurse had 1pt to review, and the 3rd nurse had a whopping 3 pts to review, the rest of the pts would be coming in later that day so nothing to review on them. They sat in their until 0740 talking, eating, drinking and I was flaming ******. You better believe the director heard it from the noc crew. How unbelievable is that! If I have 2-3 pts to review I'm out early but not very often were the day shift out before 0730. They thought that they got that entire half hour to be in their whether they needed it to review pt material or not. I'm glad I'm not on that unit any longer but I do really miss the noc girls I worked w/.

Where I work, we tape record report and when there is enough day staff on, I'm out the door. They do talk and whatnot but we all leave usually around 7:05am. Same as for nights.
