I took the med-surg cert test like 8 years ago...I never studied...I thought it was a pretty easy test...I had worked on the floor for 2 years before I took it. Its been so long though, not sure if they've changed it since then or what any of the questions were like...but compared to some of the other nursing testing I've taken, it was definitely one of the easier ones...

Ask the HN and the nurse educator at the facility to give you some pointers and help you to obtain material for the certification test. I took one years ago too, did not know it was a mock certification test but passed w/o problem. If you work everyday, you probably won't have a problem.

I attended a review course offered by my hospital and I also used cd roms by Nursing Made Incredibly Easy

I took the exam in April from the AMSN. I did receive my CMSRN, yea!! I attended a review course, but did not think it really helped a lot. I also had 2 study guide books. Experience is the best teacher, but I found that flash cards (ordered from books a million) helped the most. They are grouped by body system, give info on the front, and case study questions on the back. I kept one system rubber banded in my purse all the time and reviewed anytime I waited anywhere. The exam was 200 written questions. The format was case study, questions, updates on the case study, and additional questions. GOOD LUCK!

Experience is the best teacher, but if in doubt, attend a review course of the area in which you desire certification. I attended a week long intense review course in Women's Health and never cracked a book for the national boards as a nurse practitioner. The certification was years after the NP education, I might add. So, yes, experience is the key.

Hi Fifi9857,

I am studying for the med-surg cert test. I would like to know the name of the the cards that you ordered from Books a million, they sound like they would be a good study source. I would like to order them. Please let me know of any other good study sources that you used also. Thanks

TO ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE ASKED:

The flash cards are Mosby's Review Cards, Medical Surgical Nursing

The review books are:

1--Springhouse review for Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification

2--Prentice Hall Nursing Medical-Surgical Reviews and Rationales

Both of the books had pre-tests to test your knowledge and determine your weak area's. I would take the pre test in one book, study the material in the 2nd book and take post tests. Using the two books helped me get varied information on the same subject.

GOOD LUCK!
