Caught my first yesterday!

Healthy baby, healthy mom, who cares what the doc says. Maybe next time she'll believe you know what you're talking about when you call.

Sometimes I wonder if the MDs really understand how fast a cervix can change......They are never there for the dilitation only the catching(and get all the glory, for that matter). I've had doctors make the same kind of remarks and they can be pretty irritating. I've seen a patient go from 5 to precip in less than 5 minutes. The one most important thing i've learned in this job is......DO NOT let doctors snide remarks or ridicule of you bother you in any way.

Good job to you.....Healthy moms and babies is all that matters. Congrats, this is a milestone for you. You'll never be as afraid again as you were this time.

steph... just to clarify- i am not at all interested in catching without a provider at this point!!! that said, precips do occasionally happen where i work and nothing is going to stop that. within that (& now that's it over), i'm happy and very thankful that it was a smooth, easy, & healthy delivery for my first (with tons of credit to the two other experienced nurses there to guide me).

believe me, i was holding out to the very last minute trying to get her to breathe through it and "blow out a candle"... :chuckle lol ... it just wasn't going to happen!!

In reality, a baby coming that fast is usually a normal and uneventful delivery so it would most likely turn out fine. I just get scared about a shoulder dystocia or having to resuscitate the baby while the mom's bp goes into the tank . . . . . steph

This mom did bleed kind of heavily just for a moment (didn't turn into anything) and I was like, OMG, I know we're not going down this road!!

Oh Yea, I feel ya. Had a multip a few months back. Was four cm FOREVER, I tell ya. Was contracting but not uncomfortable. Hx of fast labor. DOCTOR KNEW THIS---- but chose to stay at home, waiting for us to call, even though he was about 20 min out. Well she started to groan and get "the look" (all OB nurses know when a delivery is imminent by that look and groan). So I check her and she is 6-7. Called MD to come in now. She delivered into my hands about 10 minutes later, anyhow.

HE (the dr) walzes in and says, "would have been nice if you called me sooner" in his most snide, simpering voice. I promptly told him to "give me a break" and walked away. I was so annoyed. I did say later, "you know, you live 20 minutes out, and you have the option to call and check in or come in---not my fault this patient went from 6 to delivery in 10 minutes". He said "I know" and that was it. Closest thing to an apology I will ever get. Whatever.

The patient was pleased, and I almost think she did it on purpose. See, she was Muslim and vehemently opposed to men caring for her. she was very upset when she learned the only OBs oncall were all men. She smiled up with a poop-eating grin, I SWEAR, and thanked me from the bottom of her heart. I really DO think she controlled the situation and I was too slow and dimwitted to see it coming til too late.

Anyhow, it happens and the MDs get sore when they don't make it, cause it makes them look bad. Even with years of experience, I have yet to be issued that crystal ball that tells me exactly when to call them in. Call too soon, they gripe. Call too late, they gripe. Can't win except to do your best. They should not complain; they still get the big bucks, even when WE are the ones who catch the babies!

Electric feeling, isn't it, Mitchsmom? Helping babies into the world is the greatest feeling I know. Almost enough to make me want to be a CNM. ONLY almost, however. Enjoy your moment. YOU DID GOOD!

We have a doc who chronically misses deliveries because he goes back to the office, or wants to come when there is head sticking out. The last delivery I "caught" for him...as he was charting..I handed him a folded piece of paper. He said..what is this? I said...MY BILL.

I love the "Here's my bill" thing, especially with the ones who continually miss the deliveries. We had (notice I said HAD) a Doc that missed many deliveries and was finally talked to about it - among other issues. He would claim he was in the lounge waiting when in reality, the Security tapes showed him leaving the hospital!

Do you do Occurrence Reports on precip deliveries? Can your Docs. view the fetal monitor strips from home or the office?

I also love the Crystal Ball thing. Think I may tell a couple of Docs that's what they can get our dept. for Christmas!!! Thanks for the idea!

Oh yes...our unattended deliveries are written up on our "safety tracking tools". I guess they sit around in the OB/GYN meeting and smack each other on the hands. I think if they DID have to fork over the fee they charge to the NURSE, they wouldn't be missing many more deliveries.
