Both of the ways pictured are a risk especially for the open end to brush up against pt's legs/body, etc. Why not connect it to the collection device first and then not have an open end to concern yourself with?Or, if you have no option but to hold the open end of the catheter while it isn't connected to anything (as both pics show), why not enclose it in the hand instead of having it hang out laterally or inferiorly? Since gloves are sterile, there is no reason not to secure the open end of the catheter to the palm of the hand with digits 3/4/5 while using 1/2 to direct the tip of the catheter.
