Here is another question I am having difficulty with...

A 29-year-old patient is to receive cardioversion for his dysrhythmia. The nurse will instruct the patient to expect:

a. administration of a short-acting sedative

b. his digoxin dose to be taken as scheduled

c. the procedure to be completely safe

d. pacemaker spikes to be monitored carefully

Is this for school or NCLEX? Like anything else....think it through...carefully.

a) If you are going to shock an awake patient with electricity to reset their heart would they require some sort of sedation? Would you want to be sedated?

b) If this patient needs to be shocked if they usually NPO so would they be taking scheduled meds prior to the procedure?

c) Is any invasive procedure completely safe?

d) If they have a functioning pacemaker, pacing them at a regular CONTROLLED RATE, why would they need to be cardioverted?

Now...what do you think the answer is?
