Hi
I am a RN student who was just informed by our school of nursing that they are going to hold student transcripts if we do not get a passing score on our ATI comprehensive test. (ATI is a company that prepares you for the NCLEX, similar to Kaplan). So this means that although I have passed all of the requirements to sit for the boards my school is holding my transcripts hostage until they feel I am ready to "pass" the NCLEX. They has expressed that they are going to do this because how we do on NCLEX reflects the school. Is this legal? Any suggestions on what I should do?
Thank You

I heard of school holding transcript because you owed them money but never heard of holding transcript if you are not getting a passing score on ATI comprehensive. Unless the ATI comprehensive is part of the teaching plan required by the state board of nursing like hours of clinical or passing grade in classes. I'm sorry but I don't think it is legally required by the state board of nursing. Best of luck to you.

I agree, call the state board.
That is what I was thinking too, gosh I am so disappointed in my school.

I doubt it's legal.
Where do you want your transcripts to go?
Are they willing to pay for the ATI or must you pay for it?
I need my transcripts to go to the BRN so I can sit for NCLEX. Yes I had to pay for ATI.

The school holds it because you owed the school money! But for not passing an exam, it is not right!
I agree it's not fair at all. I graduate in May and hope that I can get this resolved by then. Does anyone know how fast the BRN works?
Does anyone know if I report this to the BRN if my schools accreditation will be in jeopardy?

My school had the same ATI testing. I don't know if they would hold transcripts, but you would not be allowed to take the NCLEX if you didn't pass the test. I think a retake was allowed, and there was a requirement that the student do a structured review after the failed test.
The first ATI test was included in tuition, but a retake would be extra.
All that was disclosed at the beginning of the year (I was in an accelerated option program).
I can't speak specifically to legalities, but the school usually has to certify to the BON that the student is prepared to take the NCLEX, and the ATI or similar test is a way to assess that.
I know it sounds simplistic, and I'm not being sarcastic, but the best thing to do is pass the ATI.
If you are doing well in your classes, you'll probably do fine on the ATI. :wink2:
Best of luck to you.

Something doesn't sound right about this. You paid your money for an education that they provided. If you passed all your classes to graduate, that and some studying leading up to NCLEX, should be all you need to prepare.
If they've had a low pass rate in the past, that is a reflection on the school, and something they're not giving you in your education IMO.
