BLS Renewal

I have BLS certification that expires October 2020. Does anyone know if AHA is extending certifications deadlines still?

If not, I've heard about hybrid BLS classes where you do the theory online and take the test there and go to an in-person site to do the clinical aspect (compressions and ventilation). Can someone tell me there experiences with that?

Hi! When my BLS certification expired last year, I did a hybrid class through The Red Cross. I preferred that so much more over the 4-6 hour class I took 2 years prior. I was able to finish the modules on my own time. I do not remember if they give you a set amount of time to finish them (other than needing to have them done before arriving at the clinical). I finished the modules within a day or two. The clinical aspect only lasted about an hour to an hour and a half. It was straight to the point and I was able to enjoy the rest of my Saturday afternoon ? I will never go back to the day-long BLS class, that's for sure!!

No, the AHA is not e tending expiration dates.  At least the training center at my facility isn't.  We are doing something similar to what NurseMiss described: an online session lasting ~1.5 hours and a skills checkoff after.

Best wishes.

We've been using a hybrid model for renewal for years at my facility. AHA modules/videos all online (I think it's called HeartCode or something similar- all I know is the email with the link shows up in my inbox and I click it) followed by a skills demonstration session. We have 60 days prior to skills demonstration to complete the online portion. Can be lengthy, especially as we're supposed to do it during working hours and need time outside of patient care.

I think hospitals require Amer Heart. Not Red Cross. Altho other facilities, like LTC does.

I used to teach as a Community Red Cross and First Aid Instructor. Some corporate businesses also require that they have an employee or 2 who can do CPR.

Also AED is usually incl with CPR.

I just recently got a text saying the AHA is not requiring in person testing due to covid. Does anyone know anything about this?

The AHA still requires in-person testing for ACLS, BLS, and PALS.
