Bleeding at 14 weeks

I would be concerned and also have your daughter in law take it easy. The baby is not yet viable so the doctors can't really do much about her bleeding. Not saying the baby can't be okay some people do just bleed. I hope everything does well.

I have no clue about OB nursing and looking for some opinions/explanations. My daughter-in-law is 14 weeks pregnant and has been bleeding for 4 days. She had a lady partsl scan today and baby looks fine, moving about quite happily. She wasn't given an explanation as to why this bleeding should occur, just told her the baby looks fine. Is this something not so unusual? Not seeking a diagnosis or medical opinion, just a bit of reassurance that this can happen without there being any real cause for concern. It's my first grandbaby, maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily, they would have admitted her if baby was in trouble huh?

I had the same problem when I was pregnant with my third son a few years ago. Mine was due to the baby's placenta being directly over my cervix. Yes, my son turned out fine.

Bleeding is such a subjective term.....I am curious...bleeding like I have to wear a pad like I have my period or bleeding like its pink when I wipe?

I had a similar problem during my first pregnancy although it didn't last for four days. I had a steady stream of blood, and I went directly to the ER. Before I went to the triage, I felt a clot coming out. I was so scared I was losing our baby. They did an ultrasound and she was still in there, kicking around - and not a care in the world. My OB said I had placenta previa....sometimes bleeding happens without a cause for concern.

I'm very new to OB nursing, but the one case I dealt with concerning bleeding was a 20 week pregnant woman who had bleeding after intercourse multiple times. At first the docs said they thought it was bleeding from the lady partsl wall. Later on another occasion an ultrasound showed a separation between the placenta and uterine wall. It was 30 percent separated. They put her in the hospital and gave her fluids and also some mag to keep things quiet. She had some cramps/contractions at times. Her baby was not yet viable so we had to take a wait and see approach. She was discharged a couple days later, happily still pregnant. The doc hoped the placenta might reattach as the baby grew. Anyway, this early on it is hard to tell. I also wonder how much bleeding and if it is all the time or brought on by perhaps intercourse. My other question would be does she have any cramping or abdominal pain of any sort? Prayers to you for a healthy delivery for your daughter and grandchild.

The bleeding has been fairly steady, with some clots. Anyways, as of today (5th day from start of bleeding) she says it is diminishing, so we are praying this has just been an inexplicable occurrence, and all will be well. Is it OK if I come back to you all again if things deteriorate? Not for medical advice of course, but just to offload my concerns.

She should have been given reasons or explainations why this was occuring, from her doctor.

Hi there, I wanted to give you a little comfort since I too am 14 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding, and I will be an RN this may. I hounded my doctor about this, and what it comes down to is how badly you are bleeding first of all. If it is bleeding like you would be during your period, heavy to the point you need a pad or tampon this could be uterine bleeding and you should have your doctor explain if he's not concerned. On the other hand if it is more spotting and streaking this is most likely bleeding from around your cervix. My doctor explained to me that when you are pregnant you increase your blood flow all over, this is why often your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or you might wake up in the mornings with a bloody nose. Its just that every thing is now much more vascular. Same thing around your cervix area, and if you are on your feet alot or have just had intercoorifice or something that causes stress to that area you will often bleed a little, and this is normal and should subside if you take it easy. I hope this helps. It helped me out, I worked 12 hour shifts on a medical floor and then would bleed (spotting) for several days after ward, and this is how my doctor explained it to me.

Every situation is different. I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma at fourteen weeks, but luckily experienced no bleeding. However, when I did some research on subchorionic hematomas I found that one of the main symptoms was bleeding, often painless. I had really bad cramps (uterine irritability) from the bleeding inside the uterus and that was the only reason I got the ultrasound to begin with. Anyhow, I'm praying for your daughter. I was placed on pelvic rest and modified bed rest, although aside from the pelvic rest I am still doing pretty much the same things I did before. Unfortunately I could not stop doing everything to make sure this pregnancy made it. I put it in God's hands. I am now 18 weeks by dates, 21 weeks by ultrasound and my baby is thriving. Make sure your daughter's doctor gives her some answers. Good luck!

I had some bleeding in my second pregnancy: once at 6 weeks-baby was fine, but no explanation for why. The second time was around 9-10 weeks and it was a lot of blood. I went to the ER and they did a pelvic-my cervix was closed, but there was a clot on the outside. Had an u/s and baby was fine yet again. My ob/gyn had no idea as the placenta looked great and was where it should have been. That baby is now 11 months old.
