Best Online FNP Program

Published

I am looking for a good program, there are so many out there now and I am finding myself stressing over trying to decide which programs to apply to. Any suggestions on which to avoid and which are great. I really need a program that is mostly online.

I was in the same boat as you...I'd find a school that i thought sounded perfect and then see another school i thought was better. I decided to call around, see what their pass rates were for certification, cost of the program, full-time/parttime curriculum etc. For me, due to financial aid reasons (I have 16 months left of my husbands' GI BILL) I decided to apply to Georgetown first (due to 18mo full time program) and then University of Cincinnati next. both have excellent pass rates and retention rates. Georgetown is very expensive, but again i have the GI bill so that's sort of null for me. I also saw Simmons has a program called Nursing@Simmons which is set up much like the GU program (logging in on webcam for some classes and pre-recorded lectures) and around $50K for the program, however, i don't know what states accept it. That will also be a determining factor depending on where you live. =) good luck with your choices.

I will be starting at Simmons next week for their full time program. I am a single mom and need to work full time, so finding a school online with a good reputation was my main focus. I feel like I was constantly reviewing the same programs over and over and none of them seemed to be really what I was looking for. I came across Simmons College by chance. Its a private college out of Boston. Great reputation and a long standing brick and mortar FNP program with a consistent 100% pass rate (national average is about 88%).

I personally chose this school for 2 other main reasons. 1. NO GRE. I am not a believer such an exam should qualify or disqualify me for pursuing my goals and education. 2. Clinical placements. It seems so many schools (online and traditional) do not set up clinical placements. Simmons College does not guarantee placement, but they do have a Clinical Placement Team. This is all they do. They have several resources and already set up preceptors for areas across the country. You may have to drive up to 2hrs each way, but hey.....thats worth it! And if you have a place/person in particular they encourage you to vocalized this to the team so they can work with you in setting this up.

This school has an awesome support staff. They are quick to respond with any questions or issues. They provide an abundance of days/times for synchronized online tutorials with time for Q&A. Overall, I am very impressed with this schools support system. This is such a huge advantage while enrolled in an online program. I did not have anything like this with my RN-BSN online program with a well known college.

I am excited to see what the programs has to offer!

Thank you for your comments. It is funny you both brought up Simmons, I spoke with admissions the other day and liked what they have to offer. Plus you can start right away. I am nervous about trying to complete this hard of a program so quickly. I imagine it is going to be very difficult. I am also nervous about the cost, over 50k is a lot of money. Thank you for responding, I really want make this choice wisely!

Simmons has a fantastic reputation, though the online program is new.

UAB is a great school and one of the least expensive programs around.

Cammack RN,

I just applied to Simmons for the January start date. I am extremely nervous because of previous rejections from other FNP programs. Do you mind me asking your GPA? Years of nursing experience? Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated because I am a ball of nerves waiting for a response and hoping they accept me! Also, good luck with the program!!!

I ended up applying as well...waiting on recommendations and transcripts but everything else is turned in. Hoping the wait wont be too long, although I put in for March 2014, and I'd be okay with May 2014 too if need be! =)

Hi Cammack!

I was just wondering how your experience at Simmons is like? I applied recently and wanted to make sure if they really do set up clinical sites and preceptors for students. I have applied to local university as well. Hope your experience is great and plz send me a link when you get a chance. Thanks ;)
