So I've had a patient the last few nights I've worked who happens to be the worst kind....a retired nurse. I always get very nervous when I take care of a nurse or retired nurse.
The first two nights I took care of her, she was very pleasant towards me, but didn't say too much. I had to start a new IV on her, and she nearly jumped out of the bed in pain. We were very busy those nights, so I also did very speedy assessments...not my most thorough job ever.
Last night, she said to me, "You are a very good nurse". And spent the night telling me stories of when she was a nurse. It meant a lot to me having this come from a much older, more experienced nurse. :) Pretty much the best compliment I could have gotten!

i hear ya, i took care of a classmates grandmother(an old nurse), and he says she raved about me for the rest of the day.....all I did with her was start an IV, and pass a few pills.....works for me.

With some people, the littlest things make it all worth while for them. A hug when they are crying, pain meds given on time, a word of reassurance, or saying you'll do something and actually carrying through with it. I adore those patients because they make the job a little less stressful and a little more bearable.
Take that compliment and don't forget it because it can be very encouraging when you feel like everything is going wrong.

An acknowledgment or compliment from a peer means the world to me; they know what I'm going through out there.
Good job :)
