BCIT August 2013 Applicants

Has anyone heard anything yet ?!

nothing yet:(!! I've read on previous threads that the earliest people found out was on March 15, but then again people find out at different times....Tomorrow is friday so hopefully we hear something then! If not then we still have two weeks left to hear something. The waiting is so brutal:(

Do you think I should drop a quick email to them asking when they will start to shortlist and send out emails? I don't want to bother them but we're all so curious, lol

OK, I dropped them a quick email asking when is the earliest that they'll be sending out the first batch of emails. I know they must be super busy and have a ton of other emails, so I did appologize to them for that. But I know we're all anxious to know when they'll be sending out the emails, so I will keep you guys updated. :)

Okay so here's the email that I recieved from the nursing department:

We will be working through the weekend with the goal of having the short listed applicants contacted by the end of next week.

Thank you for your patience. I know the waiting is hard and that people want to make plans for the fall. Over 700 applications were received for the August 2013 intake and the selection committee did not receive the files until after the Admissions deadline of January 31, as Admissions processes all the transcripts, etc before the files are forwarded to nursing.

The nursing department is very nice when it comes to asking them questions, they're always so willing to help out. So you guys, we find out by the END OF NEXT WEEK!!!

The worst part is many of the successful applicants from Jan 2013 intake have deferred their seat to the Aug 2013 intake. Instead of competing for 96 spots, we are competing for

I didn't apply for this intake, but I'm hoping to get in for August 2014. Do you guys mind sharing what credentials and experience you applied with?

I'll be finishing up my BA in December, with a major in Geography. I know, totally unrelated subject... When I started to consider nursing, I was already over halfway through my BA, so wanted to complete it. I will have all my pre-reqs done by December 2013, and hopefully start LIBS 7001 & 7002 in January 2014. I'll be starting to volunteer with the nursing unit at a hospital next week, so I'll have about a year's experience there. My overall GPA is not great, but I've received mostly A's and some B's in the pre-reqs. My last few semesters of the BA have been strong, but I'm scared that Cs in 2nd/3rd year will hurt me.

I'm really nervous about applying because I know that the program is very competitive. What is the profile of the typical successful applicant? I would like to make my application stronger but I cannot undo previous grades and with my BA nearing it's end I don't have much time! Any advice??

My honest advice would be to go in full force. I chose not to apply until my degree was done and I had volunteer work and the two libs courses. However I don't know if I should have applied for January and just taken my chances now that I realize how few spots there are.

As nerve wracking and intimidating it may be, at least we know the end is nearing. We're fast approaching the light at the end of tunnel, so to speak.

I am thinking (hoping) that BCIT takes into consideration the numbers they have on waitlist/deferrals from the previous round.

Looking at their track record, seems like they have around 5 or so waitlist applicants for either their current application round or the next who are pretty much guaranteed a spot. So it would make sense for them to have a certain number set aside so as to make sure new applicants get a fair chance.

From what I've heard people who were wait listed in January and reapplied, most likely get in for August not sure exactly how many people depends if people got accepted else where or decided not to apply and provided that all the libs courses are done or in progress.

I applied for the January intake, was accepted, then deferred to August. It was my first time applying to BCIT. At the time of my application my credentials were the following:

BSc (honors) degree in psychology with distinction from UVIC completed 2009

6 recent anatomy/physiology credits from TRU

5 years experience working as a community support worker with the developmentally disabled

1 years work experience as a group home manager

I had little to no volunteer experience, and had taken none of the BCIT liberal arts courses.

I don't think you need to worry about your grades in your first few years. In one of the nursing info sessions they stressed the particular importance of grade improvements over the course of ones education. My grades were horrible in my first two years of university as well.

Also, I heard the prerequisites for the program will be changing for the Jan 2014 entry. Some of the courses that were previously completed in the program now must be finished before admission. So make sure to check that out. Good luck!
