I am to start LPN school this week. I am also to have a LEEP procedure done the second day of class due to a bad pap (1st one ever) for a CIN111 report that was diagnosed from the biopsy. I am very concerned and want to go to school. I am now concerned that this may mean hystorectomy time and may mess me up with school. The parth report from the biopsy says Moderate and Focally severe squamous dysplasia CIN111. with extension to underlying endocervical glands The poosibility of invasive squamous carcinopn cannot be enirely excluded.
I have been doing a lot of research on the internet. Any encouragment would be great. I really want to be a nurse. I curently am a social worker with a degree. I am returning to LPN school and then will go for my RN. I am very upset by this. Are instructors generally nice about having to miss class for medical reasons?

Hey just a little fyi i have been down the same road as you....need someone to talk to.... a LEEP is not that bad. have had many of them, just feels like really bad craps. you will have some bleeding and its not bad either after my first i didnt bleed at all. if you have a really great dr then i am sure things will be cool no worries, trust me. without getting into all the details of my story i am fine now no hysto and just getting checked every 6 months...the dr thinks one more and then we'll be all good...you really should be ok. i know is scary whenever they say the "word" but as long as you stay right on top of your health care its all good.....
feel free to ask me anything about it......i'm here

I would still go to school as planned. Let your instructors know that you will be missing school for a medical procedure. It would be a shame to postpone school for another year if everything is fine. If things aren't ok then you could drop out as needed. Good luck with everything.

i, too, have had a LEEP. Not that bad, as another poster mentioned earlier. IT really would be heavy on your mind if you pushed back starting school another year if everything is ok, but you still don't know. Just think and pray about it, and talk to your program head and your instructor. I'm sure everything can be worked out. Best of luck for you, and let us know how things work out. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I am with those who say to proceed and see what happens. DO NOT neglect to explain to your instructors what is happening. LEEP is not as bad as you think........follow up is critical. Just take it one day at a time. You are fortunate in that early cervical cancer is highly treatable. Just hang in there and make sure they know what is up where you go to school, so you and they can work out what to do and how best to proceed.
I wish you the best. HANG IN THERE and Here's to a full, complete recovery!

I worked as an RN and then NP in a Family Planning clinic for 13 years and had many, many clients with pap results like yours. Pap smears are merely screening tools, and often, the reality is NOT as bad as the pap report would suggest, however it's crucial to follow up. Chances are, with the LEEP they will be able to remove all of the dysplasia and that will be that (other than fairly frequent repeat paps for the next year or two). Sometimes a cone biopsy will be done if the dysplasia is deeper. All of these procedures, while uncomfortable, should not disrupt your nursing classes to any extent, other than the actual appointments. In 13 years I never had a client even come close to needing a hysterectomy due to an abnormal pap, so please try to think positively! Good luck!

I had to have a gyn (laparoscopic) procedure done my first semester. I had a few days notice and was able to scedule it late in the week so I had the weekend to recover. We were allowed to miss one clinical and that was the one I missed. I did discuss it ahead of time and arranged to have a classmate take notes. I was supposed to avoid heavy lifting for a few days but it wasn't a problem as my instructor chose my next clinical patient with this in mind; and I was able to ask for lifting help the couple of times it was required. I had extra fatigue for a week or so but got through it OK with no serious impact to my studying. Good luck!
