most amazing thing

So what has been the most incredible thing you have seen in your clinicals so far? I asked tthis in the nursing forum and decided to ask it here too because I am sure us students have already seen some pretty amazing stuff! I have to say that I already have a huge one for my most amazing book. I got to witness the harvesting of corneas for transplant. It was an unexpected thing and it was simply amazing. I was honored and humbled to be able to be in the room while this donor was giving sight to someone in their death.

It may be an expected reply but I was honored and humbled to witness a birth during clinicals. It was the single most amazing thing I've ever seen. Myself & a fellow Nursing student got to be in the room & we both teared up & grabbed at each others arm. It was a beautiful, amazing moment I will never ever forget or take for granted. I didn't stop smiling all day. So incredible. One minute a pregnant belly & the next a precious new life, taking first breath, crying that miraculous cry.

Birth is always an awesome thing to see. During one day of my OB clinical, I was standing next to a newborn's grandmother when he was born and we were both tearing up! :)

Last year I was privileged enough to witness an open heart surgery. It was AMAZING.

How do you get to witness surgeries? What rotation were you in? I'm finishing up my first rotation now.

I'm not sure about everyone else but OR is part of our first rotation. I'm in my Sophomore(first year) year, 2nd semester of BSN program. This semester is our first doing clinical rotations. We do half OB & half med-surg. We have 2 OR days scheduled, one in each half. I think our program does an amazing job of geting us experience.

We had OR rotations in our sophomore year as well.

My best experience, so far, was at one of my OR days. My school is on an integrated curriculum and has med-surg clinical in each semester, but during our second semester (third year of college, 1st year of nursing curriculum) we have a week of med-surg devoted to the OR; and, one of those days is at an outpatient surgery center. I was able to help prep a young pt. for surgery, follow him through surgery and into the PACU, and then help with monitoring/meds/orienting him/etc, and finally did discharge education with him and his family. It was amazing to be a part of the whole process from start to finish, and it was great for the pt. knowing someone was with him every step of the way.

We don't have an OR rotation, but starting second semester when we do clinicals at the hospital if people want to they can go to the OR for the day. The CI sets it all up.

Me personally, I dislike the OR.

As far as most amazing thing, I feel like I have gotten to see a lot of interesting thing but I don't think I have had an "amazing" thing happen yet. Still 8 more weeks of clinicals and senior practicum to go though.

The most amazing thing I have seen... A patient in the MICU, knocking on death's door. Like lab values incompatible with life. Four weeks later, off the vent, out of renal failure and on the road to recovery. It was nice because I got to see a miracle happen.

During my second semester, during my pediatric rotation at a larger hospital. (Cooper Hospital in Camden NJ). Everyone in my class got to spend a week in the OR.
