Algebra problem help needed ASAP!

I am taking the NET test tomorrow and I am going through the study guide. I keep missing the same two problems and I SWEAR I am doing them right... at least the only way I have ever been taught. Can someone give me an idea of what I am doing wrong here?

6(t+3) +8-5(t+2) =

Now don't you do the +8-5 first and get 3 and then do the problem and get

(6t+18)(3t+6)

and then 9t+24 is the answer?

What in the world am I doing wrong?

Help!

Thanks smartie pants ladies! ;)

Always do multiplication and division first in a problem. Don't work from left to right.

6(t+3) +8-5(t+2) =

6t+18 +8 - 5t - 10 =

t + 16 =

Christine

OKIE DOKIE,

This problem requires distrubution. So the 6 need to be distrubuted into the parenthesis then the -5 into the next parenthesis. PLEASE FORGIVE THE SPELLING!!! so you will end up with 6t+18+8-5t-10. From here you combine like terms and you should have your answer... How about t+16.... Is this from a NET study guide because I have been doing NET math tutoring and I remember this exact problem.....

any time you see a number sitting next to a set of parenthesis like this means to distribute into them . remember your order of operations

6(t+3) +8-5(t+2) =

1)parenthesis

2)exponets

3)mulitplication

4)division

5)addition

6)subtraction

Step by Step problem solving

6(t+3) +8-5(t+2) =

step 1 distribution

6t+18+8-5t-10

Then add those all together

Only the -5 is distributed, the +8 is out of the picture until the end.

ohmigosh! Thanks ladies! Yes, it is from the NET study guide. The problem is that I WAS trying to work from left to right. It makes total sense now!!!

Sheesh! It seemed so logical at the time when I was doing it and I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! :)

No problem! Best of luck to you tomarrow!

I'm taking the NET on Wednesday, so I feel your pain! I am lucky that I LOVE algebra - and I am glad you got your question answered! I know you're using the same study guide I've been using, because I remember that exact same question from the practice test!! :) My only problem so far with math is the division of decimals... the places get all mixed up for me... I know I'll miss those, but good luck to you! I'm sure you'll do great!

OK. Looks like Christine and several others have taken care of this.

Those have been hard for me too Janelle! :uhoh21: Good luck! I leave in about a half hour!

Here's hoping I come back with good vibes (and a really good score would be nice too...lol)! :nurse:

LOL, LarryG! Yep, think it's been taken care of. ;) (and her test is today, as this was posted yesterday.) haha

Also wanted to add that I too use the "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally." lol

Has anyone ever figured out exactly what my dear Aunt Sally did, and how is it that everyone has an Aunt Sally.....AND.....Is this the same Aunt Sally we're talking about? If so, maybe we should come up with another name for this person!!!!!!

OK, since what your "dear" aunt did at that New Year's Eve party in 1999 is still not generally known, perhaps I'm not too late to enlighten you. I attended that shindig, and will never forget it.

It reminded me of a scene from "Eyes Wide Shut." I recall your aunt and she was beautiful that night. She and a bunch of folks were... ooops! Wait a sec there! Forgot this was a public forum.

I'm so sorry! I can't disclose what happened here. What the heck was I thinkin'? Sheeesh!!!

It was great though!
