Advice needed for Uni application

Hiya! Finished my paeds nursing degree a few years ago. I'd say pick out any experience you have in working with people and highlight it....the main parts of the nurses role (well in my area anyway) are communication (so like me, did I have any experience of working with kids before, or with challenging people?) or even something like if it was a receptionists job? Something where you can demonstrate your abilities, doesn't have to be in a health care setting. What about first aid courses, St. John's or the Red Cross? Time management and prioritisation is also a big part of the job - do you do the things that need to be done now, first? Even if it was exam revision/getting coursework in on time. Do you have a prior career you can draw skills from? Accuracy, attention to detail etc. Good luck! PM me if you need anymore help!

I will be applying for a place at uni next month to do a degree in adult nursing and I'm a bit nervous about what I should put in my personal statement?? Does anyone have any ideas? I've been told to avoid the cliches: I want to be a nurse because I like helping people, ect.

Basically, what are the do's and don'ts when it comes to writing a winning personal statement for a nursing degree?

I want to get in soooo bad that everytime I think about what I should put, nothing seems good enough!! My mind has gone completely blank!!!! I'd be grateful to anyone who can help?!:monkeydance:

Where are you doing the Adult nursing? I'm starting the post grad in Adult nursing mid Sept. I used all the Cliches and still got in. 'Make a difference' is the slogan for the Agenda for change afterall. Just talk about your nature, previous experience, about how it's rewarding etc.

I was cheezy, but meant every word, so as long as you mean it....then they want to hear it.

Thanks for the advice you guys! I feel a bit better knowing that I don't have to be completely original! I don't come from a background in healthcare so I was a little unsure about what to talk about.

I'm hoping to get a place at Salford Uni starting september 2007; but I will be applying at Manchester and others in the northwest, too.

I'm submitting my application in october so fingers crossed!

I really wish you both all the very best. Nursing is challenging but it sure can be rewarding. I don't regret my decision to become a nurse, well.......ok some days I do.....but that's in any job. Now if ONLY the UK would pay us just a little better :wink2:

There are very few jobs in this world where you can come home & say I really made a difference to someones life today! As a nurse I can honestly say that most days!

When i did my personal statement i quoted my skills ie communicating, reading, writing. I also put of any experience around people and how I made a difference. What i thought i could bring into nursing.

The personal statement is just your preping the groundwork and why you feel right for a place in nursing. The hard work comes in the interview that when they analyse your abilities, it took me 3 years to get onto my chosen course and if you can when you get your interview date do some practice interviews I had one practice 3 days before interview and it went like a breeze I have to admit it allowed me to know what i would potentially say rather than going blank in the head lol.

Hi ste, hmn let me try and remember LOL was so long ago now,

They asked me to tell them a bit about myself,

Why did i want to go into mental health nursing?

Name a good and bad thing about working in a team?

What did i feel i could bring as a student to ARU.

Name an instance where I contributed to a bad situation to help a client feel at ease.

Those were the ones i can remember hope this gives you a better idea as to the sort of questions asked each uni/college is probably different in their questions

I mentored a student from Salford Uni last year, she loved it there. Our Trust didn't include Salford, but because this student lived close to our PCT (it was a Community placement) they arranged for her to do her placement with us so she would be closer to home for travelling purposes, which I thought was very decent of them. She was a great student, I was impressed by her abilities, so I'm guessing Salford Uni's a good place to be.
