Advice needed for Uni application
Hi, Thanks for the advice you guys! I feel a bit better knowing that I don't have to be completely original! I don't come from a background in healthcare so I was a little unsure about what to talk about. I'm hoping to get a place at Salford Uni starting september 2007; but I will be applying at Manchester and others in the northwest, too. I'm submitting my application in october so fingers crossed! Bye for now! Ste x x

Advice needed for Uni application
Hi guys, I will be applying for a place at uni next month to do a degree in adult nursing and I'm a bit nervous about what I should put in my personal statement?? Does anyone have any ideas? I've been told to avoid the cliches: I want to be a nurse because I like helping people, ect. Basically, what are the do's and don'ts when it comes to writing a winning personal statement for a nursing degree? I want to get in soooo bad that everytime I think about what I should put, nothing seems good enough!! My mind has gone completely blank!!!! I'd be grateful to anyone who can help?!:monkeydance: Thanks Ste

Application Rejection
Hi there, The Canadian college in question was called Langara college in Vancouver. You won't be able to do the theory online as it all has to be done in an approved school, not distance learning. The course's are $1500 (Canadian dollars) per branch of nursing you need extra hour's in. Ste

Been for Embassy interview
Thanks for the info Sue. What confuses me is how to apply for job's the direct route? Tina mentioned that it was okay to go there and speak to people face to face, but elsewhere Suzanne has said this is illegal? I'm wondering how any hospital would be in a position to offer me a job if I've not been for an interview? Do you think that hospital's will take you on on the strength of a resume? Like I've said before, I'm a few year's off going yet anyway, but I'd just like to know in advance so I have an idea of the way to go about things.

I completely agree that this shortfall in hours is a deliberate attempt to shackle UK nurse's to the NHS!!! Next minute you know, they will be banning this website in the UK!! LOL

Been for Embassy interview
Thanks for the advice you guys, I think the face to face approach would probably be the best way to go about it. I suppose my main dilemma is this business of making up the hours!!!! I had a meeting with a admissions tutor at Salford Uni this morning, and he said on my transcript at the end I will have 75 hours of theory in pediactrics, mental health, and obstetrics, but only 10 hours practical in each!!! It's sooooo frustrating when all the resources to teach me are right on my door step, when I might have to end up going to Canada or somewhere just to make up the difference. Apparently you need a minimum of 60 hours practical in each (according to ogp) which is what? a week and a half per catagory!!! I'm still a while off going to the US yet anyway, as I have yet to start my degree, but I just wanted to make sure I know as much as I can from the start!!:) Steven

Been for Embassy interview
Thanks for the advice Anna. I think then, when the time comes, I will go over there and see what can be arranged. I've heard far too many of these horror stories regarding agencies, plus I'd rather be more independent as Tina say's. :paw:

Been for Embassy interview
Hi, Thanks for the info Tina! To be honest, I much prefer to go the direct route. Is the best way to just phone hospital's up from the UK and ask them if they sponsor foreigners? Or would it be better to go over there and speak to someone in person? Or is that illegal if you haven't got permission to stay yet!!!!??? So many question's... LOL! Thanks Ste :monkeydance:

Appraisals wanted on uni's in the UK
:mortarboard: I'm currently doing a bit of research into uni's in the UK, as I am hoping to do a degree in nursing next year. Can anyone recommend any particular one? Especially in the north (I'm from Manchester). I was hoping some of you might like to share your experiences; particularly if you have attended Salford University (my preferred choice at this moment). I have an interview with an admissions tutor there tomorrow morning, but I think it would be beneficial to hear from previous or current students also!!! I want to move to the US after graduation, so (My god, this is a long shot...) if any of you have been to a uni that has assisted you in making up the hour's ect then I much like to hear from you!!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers Steven :balloons:

UK to US need info on making up hours ect
Hi Silverdragon, Thanks for the advice. I am going to phone up a couple of Uni's in my area today (Manchester) and see what they have to say about it!! According to the agency "Geneva healthcare" that another user mentioned, the hours are: Paediatrics = 20 to 40 hrs (Theory) -- 40 to 80 hrs (clinical) Obstetrics = 20 to 40 hrs (Theory) -- 40 to 80 hrs (clinical) Psychaitry = 20 to 40 hrs (Theory) -- 40 to 80 hrs (clinical) Hope this helps others with the same concerns. I'm going to email the BON for New York and see what kind of response I get from them. Cheers Steven
