Advice Needed

Need some advice. I am 59 applied to the RN and LVN programs at a junior college nearby. I was accepted into the LVN program starting this fall and made alternate for the RN program which is the program I really wanted. I just finished up all the classes that could be taken while you are in RN school so being that it is points driven I now have roughly 136 pts. out of a maximum of 150. 36 of those points weren't on my transcript when I applied for fall.

The school advisor suggested that I reapply for the spring semester RN class since I have more points and decline the LVN program. I would have to do 1 year LVN program, then a 18 month bridge program for RN if I go through with the LVN.

The RN program is a 2 year program. So I guess this is what I am asking. At my age do I take the sure bet on the LVN program and spend basically 3 1/2 years to get to RN or do I gamble on getting into the RN program starting Spring and get done in 2 years.

Can you begin the LVN program, apply for the spring RN program, and switch over if you get accepted? Or would the school be against that?

Are you still an alternate for the RN program this fall?

I'm probably going against the grain, but I'd accept the offer that's in front of me. There's no guarantees in life; hence, there's no assurances that you'll be accepted into the RN program next year.

Begin LVN school. Feel for a thrill what nursing school is. Apply for Spring RN school. If accepted, quit LVN school and begin RN school. If rejected, then continue with LVN school!

I agree with Commuter, take the offer you already have, and start LPN school. I hate to be negative, but ageism is alive and well in nursing, and it may be hard to even get a decent job offer at age 59. Take the quickest route and get your nursing license! You can always bridge to RN, but if that doesn't pan out, you would still be an LPN. Good luck to you, dear. (I am your age, and I see the opportunities for me dwindling; a lot of nurses our age have been laid off.)

I wish I could start the LVN and switch over to RN in spring if accepted but the school won't let you do that. Yes still an alternate for fall RN.

I would ask the RN school if you have a place in line and what that place is. Alternates for my school were ranked, and if you were near the very front of the line, you were as good as in. I got in as 10th alternate which was a little less secure, but still somewhat likely. People change their plans all the time. They also fail drug tests, background checks, run out of money, move, etc.
